The dumbness is unbelievable. No mobile phone in water proof bag. No $69 marine VHF. And out in heavy weather. Lots of fun. I would do it but NOT with a passenger who can't swim. And not unprepared. The skipper is hopeless. The guy should get roasted by the authorities.

Just Bear's odd humour Trek. Ya get that when you're as old and cruddy as him.

Referring to a capsized catamaran giving a good surface on which to play tennis while you wait for rescue.

Must admit I've committed similar acts in the past - sailed a Hobie off the beach with only a life jacket; no Vhf radio and no phone.
Are comms equipment now standard recommendation for Hobie's, or is it purely a matter of distance ventured from shore ?

Hi Karsten,
Mucking around off the beach on cats, I hope like Christ we never have to have electronics. I think it's part of growing up pitchpoling a Hobie off the beach and swimming around trying to get the mast out of the mud!
If its too far for everyone on board to swim/float to shore, yep, I'd definitely have a watertight bag with a phone or VHF.
