Best thing I did was take mine off. Every time I got scared at sea I would shut mine down and the lack of noise was a god send. At low wind speed it was useless. I suspect mine was an old model though.

Mine barely makes any noise as it doesn't spin fast. It was a cheapy from china, 3phase with external bridge rectifier control box

GPS. To use the over-used phrase, it's a revolution compared to sextants, peering at lighthouses, and hand bearing compasses.

What do you have? I like the idea of a wind genny, but just not what I had. Mine was 3 bladed and they were fairly long. It is amazing how the noise they produced at fully welly played on you mentally.

I remember a few years ago the Victorian jet skiers were complaining about being banned from some waterways at the same time the Victorian duck hunters were complaining about the same thing.

The solution was so obvious and so simple - just allow the jet skiers to use the same waterways as the duck hunters and to allow them to have a go at each other. Okay, the funeral cost would have been high for a while and I'm not sure who would have won, but after that the world would have been a better place.

It's hard to pick only one and I'd certainly agree with the suggestions so far, especially GPS and AIS.

My pick, with more of an eye to the future than the last 20 years, is satellite communications. I think it will become increasingly widespread and cheaper. Detailed weather forecasts anywhere and long range comms without HF radios.
