As he shone his torch at the starboard hull, he was met with every sailor's worst fear.
Floorboards were lifting as water flooded in through the half-metre-wide escape hatch.
The hatch — retrofitted after a 2020 safety recall on the French-made Lagoon 42 — appeared to have detached on its own.

This is what AI tells me when asked:

At least three Lagoons have been publicly reported lost to Goiot escape-hatch failures, plus several near-misses:

Lagoon 39, off Canouan, Caribbean (early 2024). The 2013-built boat still had its original hatch, never replaced, and it appears a wave pushed it out of its frame.

Lagoon 42 "Second Wind", Caribbean (Jan 2025). A chartered boat several years old; the starboard hatch failed in force 7–8 winds and 3.5 m seas, flooding the hull through a 40 × 40 cm opening. It isn't known whether the owner had responded to the recall.

Lagoon 42, Ted Rutledge, Indian Ocean (Sep 2026). The hatch had already been retrofitted under the 2020 recall, yet appears to have detached on its own.

Near-miss: Lagoon 52. It limped back to Antigua with a large hole in the hull.

The root cause was the hatch design relying solely on silicone bedding to hold the acrylic lens in its frame, and Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Bali and Nautitech all issued recalls in 2020.

Other brands have also been lost, e.g. a Fountaine Pajot Helia named Marita off Morocco.

He was met with every sailor’s worst fear - yes, lurking in the hull was a silly cliche that is complete bollocks. :-P

I never realised that every sailor was haunted by the fear of an escape hatch leak. Why are all sailors so worried about something almost none of them have? We need an enquiry and an investigation into this nameless terror that is terrorising our sport!

This is why catamarans are bad and should be banned.

We need an AI bot to watch this thread and say "it looks like you're confusing catamaran boating for real sailing, would you like a lie-down"

I look at escape hatches and really, really hope I never have to actually try and climb out of one.

Or, more to the point...
