Hi,

I spent the the afternoon re-bedding the side shroud chain plates through the deck with butyl tape, something I have been doing annually.

How often do others do this and is it better scheduled by time, days sailing or distance sailed?

Thanks,

Nick

Rebedding or resealing??

Rebedding means completely detatching them, checking for corrosion, polishing them up and fitting them with new bolts. That is not an annual thing even with a full on racing yacht.

Rebedding or even replacing chain plates each time you rerig is a sensible program.

Resealing them and checking for corrosion is a more accurate description.

When you re-rig or there is a leak or signs of corrosion. Not necessary to do annually I think.

I check mine visually annually. They were replaced last year with the new standing rigging, the first time since build in 1984. Probably should have been changed last rerig but good now.
Removing major components for no specific reason isn't a wise move in my opinion. If it ain't broke don't touch it, unless you have a good reason like symptoms or the part is time expired.

It is a mad idea to disturb something does not give you trouble.
My re-rigging this year included inspection of the chain plates but the rigger did not disturb the perfectly good chain plates nor the deck fittings as they were perfectly good, dry, no leaks.
Don't fix it if not broken!
