Hi. Does any one know of a mobile gas fitter who can issue a gas certificate for a moored boat in Sydney? Thanks

I can do it but to be honest most boats will fail and need work done to pass.

Out of interest, why do you say that? What are the general standards required? Does it require a auto solenoid valve, pressure tested to XXbar, location of gas cylinders, straps in cylinders, gas detectors? Why does most fail? Cheers

Most fail because a lot of people do work themselves or buy a used boat without a gas check or a dodgy one but there are heaps of reasons The info required is in the Australian gas standards and if you can make sense of that as a layman I'll give you a medal. Complex. Even down to materials and jointing methods and clipping.

That's very true , even ausie older manufactured boats, would not comply to current rules, perhaps I was lucky when registering boat, they never ask for gas certificate. But registered European caravan in Victoria fail in Qld, it was sold for parts. Because of fridge, owen, hot water service and gas central heating Fail.

Interesting! My LPG system was certified in 2012 and hasn't been modified since. Two questions:
1. Do the relevant rules specify how often a certificate needs to be renewed, or is certification after installation/modification forever?
2. Is there a date people need to be aware of, when "old" rules were updated to "new" ones, thereby invalidating an old certification?

Regardless of rules and legislation, the old "soapy water" search for gas leaks sounds like something which should be done regularly by owners.

Thanks!

I bought my yacht in Qld with gas cert. in 2013 used it for years, no worries.

When l sold it last year in Sydney the buyers man crawled all over the yacht and when he got to the gas part he asked me to start it up which l did and that was it.
No certificate, no problems.
Happy buyer, happy vendor. All good.
Legal? Illegal? Scheiss egal!

That was a good result! That also raises the question of differences between states. As I understand it, an Australian Standard can be followed (or not followed) by a state/territory. (I'm saying that just from my experience with a fire certificate standard, which was to apply to a ski lodge I'm associated with. The AS for fire annual certificates as applied in NSW was as clear as mud, and the lessor, insurance company and insurance broker had no idea what the rule was either. Nothing to do with actual safety as far as I could see, just bureaucracy and opaque language.)

And so, leaving ample ground for the solicitors to quibble!
