If you are getting a survey done for the purchase of a boat that may need some further work done after purchase (more that the usual cosmetic stuff) then I recommend also getting a shipwright to look at it. I had mine surveyed prior to purchase and the guy said it was a good boat, but 6 months later I was cutting 2 meters off the bow and replacing it. Probably had to replace another 6sqm of hull in another 6 locations. It's a good boat now.

If you are getting a survey done for insurance, then the guy I used was probably quite good

I must have missed something in the story........

The bloke that did the survey said it was a good boat but yet you had to chop two metres off the bow and in your closing sentence you mention that he was probably quite good.

I'm at a loss to understand how someone misses two metres of what was obviously a very dodgy bow and yet you say he was good.

Sorry LooseChange,
Explanation:
When you buy a boat you want to know the condition of it and what it will cost you to get it to the condition you would like it to be in. Hence you need a surveyor (and possibly a shipwright) who knows his stuff and does a very detailed inspection and a comprehensive report.

When the insurance mob require you to do a survey, you don't want a survey report that paints your pride and joy as a write off even before you get a chance to insure it. You want the survey report to say its in excellent condition and worth what you want it insured for.

My comment at the end of my previous post was tongue in cheek.

Barry Colson 0417-606-352 yes, also Chris Carrington 07-5472 7600, Stephen Warp 0418-881103 or the old chap Ken Ainscough who done mine years ago to my satisfaction. He also could supply chandlery items you might need.

Surveying is a very tricky business, you better know what you are looking at. The best way to beat them, became an expert on the subject so they are following your lead. (To be brutally honest, the insurers are just an other mafia with unquenchable desire to squeeze the pennies out of anyone coming to the door with the least risk possible.)
Patrick O'Brian comes to mind: " l do know nothing of the law, (or insurance for that matter) except that whenever a plain man comes into contact with it, he is likely to suffer extremely in his purse and his spirit no matter how sound his cause.

I can recommend Nicholas J Lockyer. Did a very professional survey and report for my recent pre-purchase inspection, at a reasonable price.
