Okay - just wanted to get some thoughts of people about how much they recon a Heron dinghy in pretty smick condition, lovely wood polished deck, fibre hull on a brand new trailer would go for?

I am thinking of selling this undercover garage hog so I can get me a kombi :P

A brand new Tasar will cost you $14,000 today and they are an old but still relevant design.

I sold one recently on a registered road trailer with a good hull, rig and old but useable sails for $1,000.

With Gillard's "buy back the klunkers" program you could turn it into $2,000 worth.

Trade it for a registered "Klunker", take the klunker to your local car yard and trade it on a $5,000 post 1995 klunker and the gubment (read taxpayer, you and me) will give you a $2,000 rebate.

That will help you out but it will certainly not help the country.

The possibilities for personal profit are endless with the taxpayer gutting Gillard/Labor gubment.

Keep tabs on eBay for a couple of weeks and watch the trends. Ebay is a good indication of the state of the market. The correct answer depends on just one buyer. Many years ago I was the sailing/boatwork instructor at Leeuwin, Navy training base in Fremantle. It was decided to clear out the VJ's and Herons from the sailing club. We had Bosun dinghies and Corsairs were coming. The boats were sold off by tender, I did not bid because I had no where to keep them. The most expensive one went for $14!

Couple of days ago a nice looking Sabre sold on eBay for just over $400.

I suggest you get in touch with the heron association, a lot of them will run a register of boats for sale.
see the SA assn here...http://www.heronsa.asn.au/boatparts.shtml
the NSW assn....www.nsw.heronsailing.com.au/forsalejuly2010.pdf
QLD assn....www.sbsc.org.au/qhsa/Boats4sale.htm

this was on the Heron national web site
"Buying a Heron
Please consult the various State websites for individual listings.
For the most up to date information, please use the email links indicated on either the National website or your state.
Wanted
Your pre-loved Heron is needed! We have motivated buyers interested to get the old bird flying again. Please consider contacting us via one of the email links. Herons are fetching good second-hand prices at the moment so why not do it now?"

hope this helps.

hey mate, the value of your heron will depend upon the condition and completness of your sails riggind hull and foils.
new sails are expensive to buy so a prospective buyer will be willing to pay more if it has a decent set of sails (racing condition is always nice)
if the hull is to weight you will be able to ask more because it will then be more compettative round the bouys
if there is a strong representation of the class in the area that will also help fetch a better price
does it have a wooden or aluminium mast?
a boat with the better of all these options may fetch a few thousand though if it has old worn sails and rigging and in need of a lil tlc could be lucky to fetch a thousand
(thats for boat alone) with the trailer set up a beach trolley is nice and on the condition of the setup add the price to the total
hope this helps :)
ps contacting local sailers of herons is very worthwhile they may even be able to set you up with a prospective buyer

Herons have wooden spars.

If you can crack one thousand dollars for a Heron you would have done exceptionally well.

The market for used racing dinghies is pretty tough. There are some clubs about that race $1000 or $500 class dinghies on yardstick. The idea is you rock up with your cheap dinghy with proof of how much you paid and race against similar value boats. The idea is to keep boats sailing instead of rotting away in backyards.

When I discovered I was too old to keep racing my Finn I gave my good boat to my son. My older Finn I sold to a young bloke in Sydney to use as part of his work up for selection trials for the next Olympics. Complete boat with a few sails for $1000. When he gets established in the class his old man is going to have to update to a new Finn, about 25 to 30 thousand for a basic boat.

Keep tabs on eBay. The boats that actually get bids are the indicators of the relative prices.

up untill a little while back yes herons had wooden spars, but a while back we got aluminium masts with a wooden gaff combination, now a one piece bermudan (excuse the spelling) is allowed. aluminium whisker poles are also class legal.

That's interesting, thanks for that. The whole idea of the Heron with a gaff rig was for the spars to store inside the boats length. Having Bermudan rigs is going to screw people with the older boats trying to sell them on. Still its tough on classes trying to survive, do you modernise or fade into history. Might have been better to go straight to carbon fibre and plastic sails.

yeah that was the major benefit of the heron (originally the car top dinghy) people are stilll experimenting with the burmeadan rig though and i believe the idea is for a two piece mast using the original aluminium mast with something like a windsurfer mast section sleeved on top (can use anything so long as it meets the specifications) ahah plastic sails and a carbon mast would be interesting to say the least on a heron.
