G'day Guys,

I was recently told that insurance companies require standing rigging to be replaced every 7 years.... Does this sound right ? (I made a quick call to an insurance company and got a very vague-non committal type response !)

Cheers,
Craig

It is my understanding that rigging should be replaced every seven years for the safety of your boat and crew. Insurance companies don't insist on it but the crunch would come when the rigging fails. The boat is supposed to be maintained in good order. If you haven't replaced your rigging for ten years for example and it failed I think the insurance company would be within their rights to knock back any claim as the boat hasn't been maintained as it should.
I am in NSW and I have never heard of having to get a survey done every five years for the insurance.

To Wannabe
You must be kidding right?
Replacing rigging is just that, the rigging, NOT THE MAST. The rigging holds up the mast and needs to be replaced because if it breaks THE MAST will probably break.
As an example in 2005 I had a 26 foot boat rerigged and it cost $3,200.
