another question!

does anybody have any experience or opinions about lab testing of engine oil samples?

a surveyor mentioned that for $150 extra they will send an oil sample off to a lab for analysis. obviously they will be able to tell if the oil has been doped with additives, but he also reckons they can tell if the engine has been overheated, as well as infer condition of seals (i assume this refers to water ingress into the engine), and various other things...

Is it a reasonably quick start Fish monkey or does it take a few revolutions before it powers up? Cisco is up on those Fish monkey. If it starts easy and no oil leaks and the oil looks OK I save the boat dollars $150 I think is a bit steep. But I short of large amounts of cash

Make sure if it runs anodes there OK

And make sure you check the gear box oil level before you start running her . Poor guy down here bought a H28 and didn't check the oil level before he motored away and stuff the gear box

They lab test oil at my work, it's done regularly over a period of time and can be an early indicator of component fail (sediment in the oil that can be tested to trace the source), oil condition and life. Water can be suspended in oil or emulsified, in some cases you'll be able to tell as the oil will appear cloudy/milky. The samples are taken with in twenty minutes of engine shut down so that any particles present will be suspended in the oil not settled and prior to replenishment so samples are not diluted. Oils usually have additives to inhibit moisture, microbes, etc present.

I'm not sure, fishmonkey. Maybe he breathed in too much diesel.

Dear HG, When you have returned from Time Out you should know that fishmonkey and I have sailed together and fishmonkey looked not a bit like this!

This is an invasion of privacy. I am calling on the admin to suspend Dr Rog permanenrlly. Then delete this post and the post by Dr Rog.

At your request Frant, the photo has been removed on both Drs and your post. However the Dr will not be getting permanently suspended by posting the photo, as it was yourself that uploaded it to the forum making it visible on a public forum.

This really is growing tiresome.

I didn't mean to invade your privacy, frant. The photo appears in your profile page - anyone can see it. I just meant to illustrate that I've met monkey and I've seen a photo of you and the two don't match.

I agree that it is becoming very tiresome. However as forum administrators you must understand the difference, and perhaps invasion of privacy is incorrect terminology. On reflection breach of copyright might have been more appropriate. The photographs were uploaded onto the Internet but as you will be aware copyright remains vested in the owner and the image cannot be used by others without breach of that copyright.
Thanks for removing and hopefully everyone will pull their collective heads in!
