Hi all, mechanical injection is one of the good attributes of Diesel engines, especially in a marine environment, think the KISS principle.
Mechanical needs a timed pump, and sprung loaded non return valves, injectors!
Common rail is an electric high pressure pump, with all injectors in a common high pressure circuit, the injectors are hi tech solenoid valves, each opening at a computer controlled tine, and possible micro controlled to open and close multiple times during one firing cycle. So smoother softer firing stokes are possible, leading to a smoother, more controlled engine. But, these intricate devices are even more finicky about fuel quality, than good old Mech, even Mech is not that tolerant of bad fuel.
Direct injection is the position of the injectors, directly in the combustion chamber. Pre combustion or indirect injection engines, have the injectors in a separate adjoining chamber.
more old tech than DI
Hi Stockie very thorough explanation , what got me on this discussion was the post on being hit by lightning, It got me thinking that that could also put your new age motors out of action with their computer control
