Found a picture of the aftermath of the rock incident. Still hurts me to see this pic, but as this thread highlights, it could be so much worse.

What am I missing? That boat looks fine to me and not the aftermath of anything. Vulnerable looking keel but certainly intact.
Close up for you. As I said, it needed fairing. Ugh.
Finot would get a chuckle over it being vulnerable. The design has been around since the 80's and they've never had a failure.


Ok thanks. Unfortunately your comment on this thread made no sense because apparently it was plucked from a long thread on SA which I couldn't find. I'm still not sure whether this was the pivoting keel which seems to have been mentioned or a regular fixed bolted keel although it certainly looks to be the later. With that cord length depth and hull shape however I doubt that the impact was with an immovable object at high speed.
Anyway to those commenting that there is nowhere for the immense amount of kinetic energy in play to be diverted apart from using the keel as some sort of fuse I must take the side that says the keel must stay on. Falling off often spells death to those below or asleep- especially at night.
The energy has many places to go. I would hope that the bow would dip significantly allowing the buoyancy to create a large wave thereby dissipating much of the energy and following that the dipped bow/raised stern to veer one way or the other causing significant heel allowing some of the original direction of travel to continue with the boat substantially sideways, heeled and dragging the keel (now much higher due to heel) sideways over the obstruction.
An angled first keel bolt so as to be substantially in tension rather than sheer under such conditions seems a great idea although obviously the hull must be also constructed strong enough so that the rear of the keel doesn't punch upwards through the hull or destroy the supporting matrix bond has happens with most modern flat bottomed (as opposed to wineglass/V-eed) production boats.
Meanwhile the vast majority of us must make do with whatever we have or whatever older boat we can afford- hopefully whilst avoiding more modern European production (flat bottomed bonded not tabbed matrix) boats of the Beneteau ilk like the plague. I'm pretty happy with my North shore 38 in this regard. My Clubman 8 is a whole other ball game but then everything on a trailer sailer is light and although it does go offshore it isn't sailed at night and doesn't go beyond the inner barrier Reef where hopefully rescue shouldn't take too long just like occurred in the namesake of this thread.
