Sealand WC flush ball

I replaced this ball due to what looked like mould as nothing would clean it.
A year or so on and now this one is the same. I've tried mould removers of various types and mild abrasive sponges with no improvement.
The WC doesn't get used very often and 90% then is number 1s.
I wonder if I could paint it?
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Metal Gleam 5;1, let it soak for five minutes and agitate with a nylon brush. Flush with clean water.
