After several telephone calls to different WA regulators I still have no answer to this question. Hopefully someone here can help.
Can someone provide an official/authorised document, or extract from such a document, that defines the Australian regulations for on board storage for butane gas cartridges and also petrol?
(I store both of these together in a vented sealed compartment but I'm curious to know the facts regarding this. The petrol is only for the outboard motor for the dinghy.)
What is clear from an extract I have of the Standard AS5601.2 2013, and confirmed by one Regulator, is that it is not permissible to store petrol in the same compartment as an "installed" LPG gas cylinder. I'm guessing that plenty of people do this but it is illegal. Note that a butane gas cartridge used for a camping stove is not viewed as an "installed" system.

There are no "Australian regulations" each state has their own regulations. See attached for the WA regulation, happy reading :)

Page 56 is the section you want, the boating section

Hi zilla,
Contrary to what many people assume, an Australian Standard is not a parliamentary legislated act, hence, is not a law. It is essentially a document that prescribes best practice.
Actual laws often specify that an action is to be in accordance with a particular Australian Standard.
So, it's worthwhile making sure a "Regulator" knows the difference between a law and an Australian Standard.
cheers

AG 601 Australian gas rules has a section dealing with it. I'll dig it up for you when back on dry land.
