Hi all

I was talking to a mate today who is looking at buying another boat and he said that he wouldn't need to get the boat surveyed to get insurance on it as it was less than 20 years old and he had paperwork showing when the standing rigging was recently replaced

Is this correct as it sounds a bit strange to me

Always comes down to the individual insurer.

I'm through a broker to QBE, with a 1983 boat. Didn't need survey or certificate.

When me previous insurer Trident refused to insure my 1984 boat on a swing mooring anymore a couple of years ago I went to a broker and they insured me with QBE and said I didn't need to have survey carried out at the time but didn't rule it out for the future

As I was slipping the boat to antifoul I decided to get one anyway and give it to them so if there was a need to make a claim at least there was a record of the condition of the boat when the took it on so there would not be any questions of a pre existing and undisclosed fault

I'm new to Seabreeze but thought I might share my recent experience with boat insurance. I signed up with Panatanius about a year ago - all good. With the insurance renewel coming up I got an email saying the boat needed its 5 year out of water survey. This was the first I'd heard of it and was pretty cranky as I'd had the boat out of the water in November last year for an antifoul. Had I known the survey was required it could have been done then. Anyway so I shopped around and CGU looks pretty good. Premiums are about the same and they do: racing extension and you can sail solo after sunset and before dawn in open waters (Pana wont allow that).
Any thought on CGU??

APIA...did not require survey....they are not cheap, but does not have the sunset clause, but it's pay by the month, so use it till the next haulout if you want to change

Thanks for the tip, kurt88. Will give them a try. I'm in the exact same position - I'm going to antifoul in Oct, so I will get the precious report at the same time.

I have heard some negative feedback in resent times about Pantanius in regard to paying claims and I believe they have just changed underwriters. It might be a a good thing changing companies.

strange, I insured with them for 2+ years on a 1979 boat, no survey required.

Youii was also going to insure the boat with no survey, but after submitting form ...all OK, but my boat was 41 ft, their cutoff was 40 ft.

Also watch out for the sunset/dawn clause.....

A large number say you are not insured in these hours. It is totally stupid,

We are all totally aware of late afternoon thunderstorms and squalls. they would prefer you to go through that......., than wait it out at a safe anchorage till it has died down an quietly sail back home after dark.

Yes, New Wave's premium is just $15 more than QBE's. No report required. Inclusions and values are the same, so I will insure with them. Thanks for the info!

I'm reviving a dreaded insurance thread for some advice - I've been having issues getting my renewal out of QBE. They kept requesting a mooring certificate even though the boat is not and has never been on a mooring. Finally got that sorted out and now they have just told me they require an out of water survey before they will renew my policy which expires on Jan 6th! I'm away for Xmas and have little chance of getting one done before then.
I'm pretty over QBE anyway due to a bunch of other stuff too, so can anyone recommend an insurer who might provide either insurance without a survey or a cover note pending getting one done? The boat was built in 96 but is steel and a non production line boat so suspect I'll require one for most insurers, really just need more time...
