Would anyone be willing to hazard a guess as to why there are no Bareboat Charters in WA (none that I can find anyway)?

Is it because any destinations within an acceptable area are limited (out of metro we really only have Rottnest Is. Carnac and Garden Is are ok but limited as far as shelter goes and Mangles Bay, which I actually quiet like). Or is it cost vs usage due a lower population?

I remember Don Punch down in Bunbry use to do it -Southwest Yacht Charters IIRC- now known as Ocean West I think, but they seem to only do skippered charters now.

The problems is with the local laws in WA, its just about impossible for a small operator to get the charter permissions

Thanks blackswan, b00dy gumint stuffs it again.

So if you were to do a skippered charter, what happens to the skipper at anchor?? Do they generally make themselves scarce (not leaving the boat though) or do they usually expect to be 'involved'? Bit hard if you are trying for a romantic getaway and the skipper keeps hanging around.....

Ah, it's a mute point anyway. I don't want to do the romantic thing and she doesn't want to do the yachting thing....

Thanks Don, I hadn't seen that one. It does look like a skippered charter even though under 'crew' it says bareboat. I'll have to give them a call.
Thanks again...

In addition to regulations, there be issues around lack of demand and perhaps lack of suitable destinations deemed "safe." Bareboating seems to flourish when there is a concentration of relatively safe destinations within short sailing distances of each other.

I think this is one of the reasons why bareboat charters don't operate in SA either (although I'm of the personal view that sailing our two gulfs _is_ relatively safe and there's no shortage of interesting destinations.)

It used to be in years past there were bare boat charter operations in either or both Spencer's Gulf and St Vincent's Gulf. I believe the premier yacht available was the Duncanson 40.

I met a nice guy at Airlie Beach in the early 90s who was from S.A. and he was operating his in survey Dunc 40 called Athena of Adelaide at Airlie. Lovely boat!!! Barry was his name.

It is the same here in this end of Tassie

People say we have some of the best cruising waters around but there is not a lot available in the way of bareboat charters

It would be great if he was still operating in these parts, but I have a hunch he isn't anymore. Will look into it, since visitors are always asking.
