Hi I am currently living in Sydney but have made the decision to move to Brisbane so I can become a home owner and aim to live in either Redland Bay or Deception bay. Sydney is too stressful and the cost of property is too high.

I am planning to sail up on my Hartley Fijian 43 foot concrete yacht and look for work in Brisbane.

Moorings are simple in Sydney and easy to get, you do not need insurance or boat license but you do need a street address.

Did a google search for Brisbane and found a mooring is called a buoy mooring in QLD but its not clear how they work. In NSW we have mooring maps but could not find these online for Brisbane. So I am hoping to tap into some local knowledge via this forum.

1)My questions are, if I set sail from Sydney but my street address is still in Sydney, could I get a mooring in Brisbane? If I need a street address in Brisbane I could move into a back packers for that purpose.

2)Which are the best areas to moor a boat near either deception bay or redland bay where I am aiming to buy a house once I have got a job in Brisbane.

I found these fees from the QLD gov site but they dont specify how long your boat is, and seem very cheap from $78 for a 1 year mooring.

Is this what you pay for 1 years mooring in Brisbane? Seems much cheaper than Sydney.

Up until early this year I kept my 37ft cat on anchor at Redland Bay. There's some good anchoring in the gutter at Redland bay out front of point Talburpin.
GPS marks are: 27 37.91S 153 18.98e
That'll put you in a deep hole with good anchoring mud bottom. It's got plenty of swing room. I used to anchor there with two big monos and there was still heaps of room for more (and I let out fifty metres plus of chain at a time). Plenty of water to get in and out even at low tide. And even OUR state government hasn't yet worked out a way to charge us for using our own anchor. But if you want to use a swing mooring, call Pelican Slipways (it's about half a km from that anchorage), they maintain and rent out the moorings in front of the ramp.

Moreton Bay doesn't have the same multitude of small waterways that make good mooring areas in Sydney. Have a look on Google Maps and you'll see where to base some enquiries. There are a few areas around Redland Bay and Victoria Point/Point OHalloran. There are also a few off Cleveland however this is very exposed to summer northeasterlies.

I noticed from a google search that some had anchored their boats in QLD, I also read that in Aus it was illegal to leave your boat unattended whilst at anchor? Would prefer to be in an area with a few other boats for security.

Very few moorings in Brisbane area most boats are in marina berths , for a 13m wet berth it will cost $8,020 a year at Manly which would be good spot to base yourself ( train line close)

Thanks for the info on Manly, looks very central on the map but paying 8K + insurance would make QLD an expensive option, I hope to rent a swing mooring.

I have never tried for insurance, its not needed for the swing mooring in Sydney. I think it must be possible to get insurane though.

Will have to check places are concrete boat friendly, the good ferro boats are as good as any other material in my opinion.:)

deception bay is shallow. I presume your looking off the beach of Scarborough or Newport? im not sure there is much else other than Caboolture river where I have a swing mooring. but again its shallow.

you could look at bribie island. I was told that if I could give the gps coordinates to MSQ and there was the space, I could place a mooring in that spot. most of the spots close to shore seem to have been taken now but iv'e seen a few boats away from the shore. bribie is bad in a SE wind, lots of roll and yaw. if your interested in bribie I can do a scout for you this week or next as I should be driving there for work.

when I registered my mooring they wanted a qld registered vessel. im not sure if that means a NSW boat would not be able to get a mooring.


I think most places have a wait list that are closer to the city.

Thankyou, I think I will phone around some of the areas people in the replies have suggest and see if its possible to rent a mooring. Was hoping to get the boat anywhere thats safe and in driving distance of Brisbane. Good point about being a NSW boat, will ask that too. In England for the next 2 weeks so will only make limited midnight calls from here.
