What about a nice cruise up the East coast to Launcenston and then wait for it and a quick motor in the middle of a high across Bass Strait? The problem I found trying to cross Bass Strait in January was that the only westerlies (I was going to Eden) were on the front of a cold front. And with my wife on board I didn't want to do that - so we waited for a calm and pushed across at a good pace under motor. Got into Eden with a couple of hours to spare. And we almost never motor long distance.

I got told by all the locals that coming back across in March/April was the best, with the highs changing latitude to give you nice southerlies. But we had to get home.
