Im going 400 watts 200ah batteries.
id consider getting one of those little Honda gennys

Where in the hell are you going to mount 400W's of solar panels on a Top Hat Steve???? You would never use the generator with all that!!

I have a GME AIS receiver and have found it is all I need. I always call up approaching ships with their name [and yes they always answer]
and tell them what I'm doing and ask is that OK.

Usually ask are you the yacht that is ....... and when we agree they tell me I'm Ok and they HAVE ME ON RADAR and their intention is .........

No problem, I have a dedicated Ariel for the AIS mounted on my solar panel frame and regularly "see" vessels over the horizon.

As far as class B is concerned I wouldn't be considering one unless I had a high value vessel and in which case I would have the
system locked away so if the vessel goes for a little trip I would be alerted immediately as to where she is.

Sorry, it's the XB-8000 we have that has wifi.

You could run this with just an iPad, the vesper app has a radar type display for AIS. I haven't tried it using the AIS GPS as my phone and iPad are GPS equipped (I presume that's what the iPad/phone is using) but it says it sends GPS info over the wifi So it should work on a non GPS iPad. We placed the GPS antenna in the cupboard at the Nav station and it works fine.

Tacktick is an easy setup, but I would probably go a wired system given the choice. To get the tacktick to talk on the sea talk network and wifi, you need the T122 interface which adds to the cost. The tacktick anemometer is battery charged with a small solar panel, we had to initially replace the batteries which is cheap but eventually the solar cells packed up and we replaced the whole anemometer, that was a 9yr old unit. the display unit can be hard wired and our original is still going strong after being hard wired for power.

We use a VHF splitter to connect the AIS to mast top VHF antenna, we can pick up AIS targets 150nm+ away.

latest firmware update for the AIS includes an anchor alarm, and MOB for personal AIS.

well id say the 2 times 200watt panels will fit on my new bimini frame. im still yet to check. im still unsure of what, how etc. id do at least 200watts, but i did see some panels on ebay, 2 times 200 watts for $400. I dont really wanna run out of power like i did all last week. dunno what battery world are doing with my battery. theyve had it a while. they would have had it total a month all up.

Perhaps a 'passage plan' drawn up on the K.I.S.S. principle would ease your burden starting with the basics:

-boat preparation, vessel hardware (hull, deck, propulsion, openings, standing rigging, running rigging, winches, water tanks, toilet, plumbings, cooking, dinghy, anchors, chains, rodes, warps etc.)
-safety gear (pfd, tether, flares, grab bag, epirbs etc.)
-electricals (batteries, solar panels, wirings, fuses, lights red too! etc.)
-electronics (radios, gps, fridge, plotter etc. But only what one needs on basic level)
-navigation (compass, charts, nav.tools, binocular, hand held compass etc.
-medical (basic medical set, seasickness, sunshine, stingers etc.)
-provisioning
-clothing
And so on. Step by step, systematically...

When you are done, and you still got money and kudos left, go shopping for those bits your eyes are longing for and you can afford.

Some old cruising books would also give brilliat ideas.

Ps: I am doubtful about your bimini holding up
even a small solar panel in a moderate blow.

I guess i dont really know what i want - well i do but i have no idea what stuff does what.

im preparing to sail up to QLD and beyond next year and i would like to 24 hour sail. i want boats to be able to see me and me them. Id also like a chartplotter. I was hoping there might be something all in one. i have a handheld garmin, navionics on phone and ipad. maybe i dont need a gps seeing as i already have a few. I will be chart plotting on paper charts using the dead reckoning system, deviation etc. id also like to rig up a windspeed thingo on the mast with the display for that on my plotter. i might be going a bit overboard with the things i want...might not need any of it. probably dont!

I guess my main concern is other ships at night

I'm in the same boat at Steve... figuratively speaking...lol.... only vague idea of electronic navigation options.... I hear talk of Iridium Go... don't understand what it does. I have Navionics on my phone, and a Youbeatu Raymaring Chartplotter in a box still not wired up..... and I have plans to sail north... supposed to be next month but hurt one of my rotor cuff tendons so may suspend those plans yet. I was thinking the same... 24hour sailing to just get there instead of stopping all along the way. Does Navionics work on phone when out of range of Telstra???

Oh boy, here goes. The Navionics will work on your phone if you download the charts and your phone has a GPS - most do, but the charts look a lot better on a pad - but the pad also must have a GPS. A cheap android will do the trick. Get busy and set up your Raymarine plotter, if it is the one with a touch screen or the hybrid it is very good even though it's a bit hard to customise to your liking and some of the features are not covered in the manual. And if the plotter has been in the box for a long time download the latest software from Lighthouse please.

Why on earth would any of you guys want to do overnighters on the Queensland coast? There are so many really beautiful stopping places that are only day hops to get to. Take your time and spend a while at places like the Pin and Moan Point and Wurthumba and Keppel and Pearl Bay and if the weather is right Whites Bay. I am sure you have Lucas's book but do you have Noel Patricks's Curtis Coast? And the 100 Magic Miles by David Colfelt?

I am heading North myself at the end of the month so I will wave as you pass me.
