Looking at buying a 28 foot sail boat is this something that can be taken to sea or is it something for harbour use? I'm new to sailing and any information would be appreciated

more h28's have done global circumnavigations than any other model of boat.. so yes you can do more than sail around the harbour. but its the design of the boat as well as the length that deems it suitable.

how comfortable the adventure might be in a smaller boat is another question.

Yes a good h28 will do the job . The skipper and any crew are the the weak link in most failed cases .........

Check out www.projectbluesphere.com/ It's a great read.
If you start at the beginning, Alex's first boat was a Westsail 28 in which he sailed solo from the east coast of the States to Brisbane.
I wouldn't want to do it in any 28footer but there are some that would be suitable.
