I'm looking at building an experiment foil, I'm thinking why not a low speed one for SUP and on a wing foil setup. Probably build a wing foiling board too.
The building will be easy but I'm not really finding any sites that talk about foil design. Manufacturers all reckon theirs is the best of course, and published wing areas / span / chord are helpful but I see massive differences in draft (presume thicker for slower speed use)

Has anyone got any links for foil design that isn't uni research papers? All I'm finding is how to shape 5 ply and glass it, not actual design talk or plans.


Then - thinking about busted foils that are worth repairing, there must be plenty of buggered stuff out there that people want to part with? Anything....

These two get mentioned in a few places, the academic paper is for foiling Moths but figure the foil should be applicable

Go check foilfeed and the standup zone. There are a few of us who have posted foil designs.

Also easy3dcomposites has a cheap e book that contains links to Fusion360 files for foils. Even if you don't print them they are worth the money to just study them and free hand a copy.

Foil 3D files are also on shape3D site. But in the end, as you will see, as much as it's rocket science, it's also not rocket science.

My favorite story on The Progression Project Podcast is when Erik gets kinda fan boy with Cliff from UniFoil. (Erik, I'm teasing. Hope you can appreciate the humor here.) They are talking about Cliff's cutting edge foil design and how it's a great high performance foil. Erik tries to dive into the process (he's a process guy like me) and Cliff admits that he was actually trying to make his buddy a low performance foil and just failed and used that for his high performance one lol.

Seems like theres a lot of trial trial and error and prototyping going on. If you've got the carbon, resin, and patience you might end up a foil design master.

Go make one. It'll fly. It might break. The next one might be better. You'll find a magic one. Oh and it'll cost about what a Gong does once it's done unless you're a badass and pro at board construction already. ?? But fun as hell if you like building stuff. I built one, I bought one, and I'll build another when I have the time I'm sure.
