Now this is the future of foiling, flying downwind. Can't wait till the Conditions line up and I can give this a go.

i think that this is one of the ways that foils will excel and open up a boat load of new opportunities, the conditions look far from ideal for pretty much anything, but old mate seem to be getting a few and having some fun

Definitely better out in the open ocean as opposed to a crowded beach break

Beach breaks and foils don't mix that's for sure, unless it's fat..you don't want to be caught in the white wash trying too hang on too a foil??

Actually, it is not so bad with some practice. It is just that mistakes can have more serious consequences, both on the gear (foil breaks) and the rider, so use bigger safety margins. The behavior of the board caught in the whitewater can be quite unpredictable.

Beach breaks can be fun if you can find places where a rip creates a deep zone between the shore and the outside sand bank. This way you can take off easily on a breaking wave, then fly easily on a receding, non breaking wave... a kind of ocean foiling. The great part is that these are so frustrating to surf normally that people have a mental block and do not even see these kind of spots anymore, so you can be quite alone, even in crowded areas.
