Ive just upgraded to a new Kalama E3 5'10" SUP foil board and my wife has recently discovered the joy and serenity of flat water paddling a SUP (Pittwater/Lake Jindabyne/Lake Ainsworth etc).
Since Im not really riding my SUP anymore (learning to foil) she can easily paddle my 8'5" Naish Mana, but when I try and paddle the 5'10" SUP foil board (without a mast/foil) on flat water, obviously I go around in circles with every stroke of the paddle - no **** Sherlock :-)
Today I fitted a reasonably large track mounted fin from my Mal in one of the tracks on the Kalama and I went in circles, so my question is - If I was to fit a large, dagger style fin in the tuttle mount and have it slid as far back as possible in the tracks, will that be enough to give me some directional stability to be able to paddle in a somewhat straight line ?
Is it length or overall area that is going to possibly give the board some resistance to yaw?
If so, then when my wife wants to go for cruisy paddles on flatwater I could simply remove the mast/foil from the Kalama fit a big fin and not have to buy another SUP board...
