I ride the Starboard 8'5 Pro in wood construction. I like the slightly heavier board rather than the carbon only because I'm light and mostly surf fast, open ocean reefs to fast, hollow take off point breaks.
I'm 70kgs and find the shape and volume great.
29 wide at 106L is plenty stable. The glide and picking up waves is spot on.
The word on the street is that there is not much more that can be done to this board to make it any better.
You have been on it and loved it so I reckon go get yourself one
Hope this helps. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

i'm about 72 kg, so about the same as you really, so you reckon the carbon construction might be a bit light if i want to take on more serious wave?
i'm a bit of a novice at surfing too, so i don't really know what board for what wave(only have a vague clue)...
what fin set up do you ride yours with?
thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge!

if anyone had a go on the fanatic 8.5 ltd 2013, or both, please tell me what you thought of it, i can't get a demo of it unfortunately...
and i'm aware that perth surf wouldn't be much representative...

It's all about the feel as to what construction you want to go with. There is nothing wrong with carbon. It's light, strong and looks unreal. For me I find it too bouncy when it's a strong offshore and the waves are a few times over head. I'm sure it would be spot on for glassy perfect conditions but that's about once a year down here hahaha. There always seems to be a bit of wind when those big mean swells come stomping through
Anywho but that's just my personal choice. I ride the wood construction and reckon they look sweet. They stand out and look good in red.
I ride mine as a thruster. I've tried the quad set up. Both feel different and again personal choice.

I've ridden the Starby 8.5 in carbon and really liked it. At my 204 pounds it felt pretty stable and still floated me well. I've tried the other constructions as well and nothing beats the carbon in my opinion for responsiveness. The other constructions are still very nice, but the carbon seems to make the board that much more alive (or bouncy maybe if you're lighter;) ). The carbon boards seem super durable too. Sorry, no experience with the Fanatic. Nice looking shape though!
