Quick question & apologies if this topic has already been covered: what is the optimal leash length for a 9ft board in decent size surf (is 8ft too short?) & I presume the bigger the board, the longer the leash should be? Thanks

Yes, if a leash is labelled 8', it is just the length of the urethane cord. Add the rail saver, ties, swivels, and the fact that the leash plug is forward of the tail, and a 8' leash ends up in front of the nose of a 9' board.

I'd say bit shorter than board unless you want to get up the nose then obviously you'd want a bit longer

i used a normal surfboard leg rope for I while ..since getting a 8 foot naish coil rope ..a lot less tangle ups with your feet and paddle ..go coil ..

Thanks Tardy. I must say that I haven't seen too many SUP surfers using coiled ankle leggies. I understand the concept (eliminates drag which is handy for things like down winders) but is it common practice to use a coiled ankle leggie in the surf?

I use Ocean and Earth premium one piece leashes. Haven't had one break yet (touch wood). I try to go for slightly shorter than the board as they have plenty of give, althought the 10 ft is a bit thicker.
I think I've managed to break every other brand mainly at the joint in the cord itself near the ankle strap, O and E leashes are one piece. Even snapped the Balin storm, but to be fair it was a "tanker" board in much too big surf for it, so didn't make too much of a fuss. One thick rigid bit of rope that sucker!
Used a coil for a while but found it around the paddle more than I liked, so when it broke, I didn't replace it.
Trial and error SUPing.

It is horrible!
- when you are paddling around, the leash may sit in the board, but as soon as you are on the wave, and the rear foot on the tail pad, the WHOLE darn thing is in the water, huge drag!
- when you wipeout and the leash recoils, there is a big chance that will tangle, and it is a major pain to untangle!
