looking for a replacement SUP for WA waves outside of the Perth area. So needs to handle bit of wind chop and fast & slow waves from shoulders to over shoulder to over head high. Margs , Avalon to Exmouth. Don't want a more than 2 board quiver as I'm more of the view of learn a board to make it work in most conditions as i like simple life. I have vanguard for Perth waves and small fun stuff.
Did have a JP surf 8'10 which did it all but got too big as i progressed.
However I'm struggling to find comparison reviews for SUPs or reviews that are not just new board hype. I fallen for new board hype before and unfortunately demo'd in the best conditions for that board and now finding the board struggles if I'm not in those conditions.
These are the boards I'm considering. Anyone had long term usage of these boards in varied conditions?

JP SURF PRO 8'6"x29" - Mainly because how good my 8'10 was. Only review i found is against the JP slate.
SMIK twin 7'10 x 29.5 x 108L - Love the concept, fan of twin boards (surf & windsurf) admire the designer, owner. Local guy. Want to buy this but only reading its amazing so far and wondering if its hype or is it true love.
SMIK Spitfire 8'3 x 29.5 x 111 - demo'd for an hour. think i really liked but not sure with only 1 hr. Found it front footed. Anyone find this?
Sunova Flash 8'6 x 29.5 - Sale blog reads perfect- anyone used one
Naish Mad Dog 8'1 x 29 - Always had at least one item of naish in my watersport locker but not at moment. big admired of Robbie & the image. Again sale blog reads great. Anyone used one.

Yo Penguin

Nice list of boards in there. You might want to add the Infinity B-LNE to the mix. Boards are super stable, high performance and solid build. I'd recommend the RNB but going off the list youre looking for a more classic shape. Have a look at some of the chats and reviews

*Disclosure: Stoked to say I'm an Infinity dealer

Hi, I am probably not much help, but am in the same position as you. I am 90 kg looking to upgrade to a more surf performance board from a 9.2 YOB that I started on. Have looked at a Jimmy Lewis ( World Wide 8.5) great shape and good on wave but very corky in our windy conditions. Have also looked at the Sunova speed, recommended for Perth but not convinced until find some serious surf. Looked at a few others still keen on the Jimmy Lewis as such well made boards but need to find one that sits in the water more for me and will go from Perth very average to down south very good. Others been looking at is the Smick twin fin which looks good but need to trial as you say and the One SUP surf performance (8.5) which looks really good in shape and design but having difficulty finding information on on the net. Keen to hear what others have to say on boards as serious at up grading but same as you want a board that I surf every day no matter what the conditions small to big.

Custom Sunova or Smik would be the best option. I have both and they are really top quality boards.

Hi

I have a custom 8.5 Sunova Speeed and an Infinity B-Line 8.5
Both boards are great quality and surf extremely well
The B-Line is now my go to favourite board and can be used in all conditions
Construction of both boards is top notch

Thanks Bender but that width is a little low I think for what i'm after as a allrounder. I'm 78kg 175cm and Fifo so don't get to surf daily. What size are you and how much did you use in typical WA conditions?

see my add in the buy and sell (or through my profile). I find it's plenty enough stable as it 8'10. It has plenty of rocker so it handles the bumpy stuff fine. I like the narrow nose in windy conditions it makes paddling into stiff offshores much. $1000 with flying objects cover

If you have time check out the Ocean Merchants custom carbon in the "Little Sup" coffee shop Eric street Cottesloe (WA) before the owner collects it on Wednesday. It is a 7'7x27 80 Litres, it would have to be the sweetest looking board I have seen and construction looks first class, weight like 5kg. Made locally in 4 weeks and around $1,800. I'm looking at getting a scaled up version, 7'10"x28" x 89 litres

Those are all good boards. I like the look of the Smik Hipster Twin, and Scotty certainly rips on it in sizeable waves, but maybe a bigger/more traditional shape would be good for larger/tougher conditions as part of a 2 board quiver.

I'd choose between the 8'6" JP Pro/ Flash/B-Line, or the board I just bought for the same exact purpose (2 board quiver alongside a 7'10" L41), the Sunova Creek. It's a bit wider in the nose (similar to B-line) and more stable for choppy conditions than a JP Pro of similar size. An 8'4" Creek at 105 liters would be a good step down from your 8'10".

The Bline is a sharp almost full rockerd performance style SUP, the board has similar characteristics to the the Likes of JP, Sunova and Naish to name a few however, The biggest difference is in the refinement of the shape. The shapes that Dave is coming out with really do mimic the likes of there smaller "shortboard" brothers.

The detail through the rail is mind blowing while the channelled release through the square swallow (only way to describe it) gives the board plenty of lift and release when wanted, Matched with the razor sharp rail profile all the way to the front of the fins makes the board super responsive.

With the slight step in the rail approaching the fins, Its deceiving just how much they have pulled the rail line in however, The board does still carry considerable volume in the tail thanks to the combination of the above mentioned. This allows it to perform like a much smaller board whilst giving the rider ample stability.

To give you an idea, Both my son and i have been riding Naish boards for a number of years. Whilst i was able to get on most boards and decide then and there whether they were the board for me or not. The grom on the other hand can ride anything (at his weight he'd want to be able to)

Even on his short boards, teaching a grom to bottom turn and flow out of the transition is a seriously frustrating task however, on the Bline we saw a dramatic change from the second he put the board on the water. The board has accelerated his ability like you wouldn't believe (im not just saying this) Straight off the bat he was able to engage the rails, manouver and transition like he had been riding the board for years.

This has been witnessed by a number of people and documented on video as well. These boards really are the future of our sport and im so stoked to be a part of the Infinity family.

Rant done, Hope this helps

These days you pay over $1000 for a short board, The "3g" mark is about the average for a quality carbon SUP. When you think about it, There is a considerable amount more involved. These boards are not mass produced copy's coming from one of probably 000s of factory's that claim to be the best. As with most of the bigger brands, the boards are coming from one of the most respected and trusted factory's in the world.

Although they are "production" boards and produced in some form of volume, They are subject to stringent QA and have the full backing of the manufacturer, distributor and retailer. Unfortunately we are a very small percent of the market (for all brands) and therefore at times are unable to purchase at the same rate as someone with a much bigger market share.
All in all we are actually one of the cheapest country's in the world to buy boards, kites and loads of other fun tools.

At the end of the day, as much as some may debate or dispute. You get what you pay for. I'm not saying that everyone should go out and buy a $3000 board but if you can justify the money and the product suites your particular requirements, You buy it. Do we all drive around in $500 beat up old cars? No. If you had the money and could justify it, would you buy a $100000 or $200000 car?

The point is, There are people that will never spend anything close to that on a car as there are people that wont ever spend more than 4 or 5 hundred dollars on a board. This doesn't mean that value isn't there. If you don't agree with it, that's fine but that doesn't mean its not worth it.

Unfortunately we are subject to a flooded market. I'm not referring to the Naish's, the Jimmy Lewis's or any other of the brands that actually support our sport and promote growth, I'm sure they would all love to see there products being sold for there intended RRP, We have just bread a culture that has forced these guys to cater to the market that has been forced by cheap, imitation crap.

Sorry Peguin for hijacking the post, I just had a moment

I do not for one second think Dave's products are not top notch. He is a master and a progresser and with some of the younger rippers is developing some insane boards and surfing from tehse guys.
But i do not think he is doing himself any favours charging that much for a stick.

I pay around 700 for fully custom hand shaped surfboards that hold up well for surfing and kite surfing.
Yes a SUP has more foam and more glass, maybe 2-2.5 times.
$3000 bucks is 4 times that price. just sayin.

this being said, going totally off subject.

Well finally got to shop to demo a Smik 7'10. Confidence inspiring, I think sums this board.
Not to much swell around but a fair bit of wind. Took it out in small choppy conditions and love the stability and the short manoeuvrability . However today took it out in 20kts, white caps everywhere and waist to occasion shoulder messy waves. Hardly fell off the board, I battled with the wind but not the water conditions, I'm 78kgs coming back after 14month off from a broken knee and I was confident and enjoying myself. I want the board for WA conditions.
Love the short length. Felt the smooth transition on the wave mentioned in the Smik video. So I bought it, well tried to buy but all sold out..So waiting for delivery. Was worried if the 7'10 was too big but chatted with shop and watch videos etc can to conclusion 7'10 is perfect. Step forward for stability, step back for loose.. So waiting waiting...

Ha haa - sorry mate looks like I grabbed the last one on Sunday then just before you. I went through a similar process at a similar weight wanting to step down from a SB Pocket Rocket. I first bought the 8'3 spitfire. No 7'10 demo at the time. I like the spitfire but missed something a bit looser as the quad set up on my PR. Demo'd the 7'10 on sunday in small bumps at cottesloe and was blown away at the stability of such an small board and loose/ responsive feeling on a wave. Cant wait to take it out to some of the 3 mile spots I surf of Hillarys in solid swell. Hope your 7'10 will be in the shop soon.

Hope your 7'10 will be in the shop soon.

you lucky sod...
Had a few good sessions at 3 mile reef, over the years.
