not from a surfing background... how long for a leash in surf (same as board?) and do they make any like boogie board leashes with a coil in the middle so less trails in water.
when would you choose a calf or ankle attachment or is that just preference?

the size of your leash deponds on what you want to do on the board, i have a 9'11 board and use a 5 or 7 foot ankle leggie depending on the surf, this is my performance board so itend not to move around on it, but on my 11'6 where i tend to walk around a bit and noseride i use a ten foot calf leggie, this is so it doesn't get in ur way as much when your moving around and cause you so fall etc but this is just preferance and experience cause you find what works for you, coiled leashes are good for racing or downwinding but i dont know anyone that uses them in the surf, i would assume they would sort of sling the board back at you a little and you dont really want that, a straight leash has hardly any effect from drag anyway so it wont make that much of a differnce that you'll notice it.

My 2 cent's worth is leash as long as board, and the bigger the surf, the longer the leash. I do use a 6' leash on an 8'6 at a reef when the waves are very small. Foolishly I used the same short leash in head high waves last week and copped a pintail between the eyes... I shoulda known better.

was the leash plug on the center?
It seems having the leash plug on one side dramtically reduces the risks of getting the board back on you
