For anyone who's interested, or those who've been inspired by IronPhil's video of the 2008 race. The website for the 2010 race is up and running.

www.molokai2oahu.com/

25th July 2010 - 32 miles

ps. If there's any other girls out there thinking of doing this race, I'm currently looking for a partner to race as a team of 2 so please let me know if you're up for the challenge.

Cheers,
Ali

From the event website rules
"Paddleboards and Stand Up Paddleboards. Both disciplines will have individual stock and unlimited classes, women’s stock and UL classes, and 2 persons and 3 person relays in stock."

I think they have had unlimited teams classes in the past so I'm hoping they're still a category this year. Not sure whether stock is classified as 12'6 or 14' for this race?

What is the $10k for? I saw on another post the support vessel costs around $1000 so is the rest for flights, accom, board, time off work for training, bunchloads of bananas?

8000-10000

easy
if you take a partner/wife eg. 2500-3000 flights

all your entries. 150us

you need some one on your support boat u can trust.

get your board there 700-900 (i know a guy who paid 1100).

support boat 750-1000us

accom for at least one to two weeks before so you can use to the heat and conditions.
accom any where between 100-400us a night. you do not take everything over to molokai as you have to swim to a boat with your stuff. and you would want to go for at least 10-14 days.
so maybe 2000-3000 and accom for 2
rent a car because you can not walk everywhere with your board. 650 - 1000 for 10 days

flights to molokai and transfers and accom for 2 people 600 at least even more.

oh then all your protein powders energy drinks for there/before for training and race maybe 500

all your food/drink for all the time you are there for 2 people 1000-1500

the list can go on and on,

8000-10000 easy.

1 person 6000-8000 still

So in a nutshell:

Unless you win lotto, have a job that pays ridiculously well but still leaves you with enough spare time to hit the ocean when the conditions are right as well as training your butt off or have a very understanding missus with a Double Income No Children situation these kinds of races are extremely difficult to do.

It cost me $6000 in 2006 to do Maui - Molokai and Keanae - Kahului (via Maliko) races. That did not include Molokai to Oahu, which would have cost and extra $2k at least, so the $10k ain't far off what you will spend. At least the Aussie $ is in your favor, it was $.68 in 2006.

Tip, don't skimp on the support boat cost, pay for a good one that has done the race many times and don't take bananas on board, Hawaiians believe brings bad luck.

Cheers Rambo
