Hi guys,

This is my first post after being an avid reader for a while. I'm looking at downsizing from my 12ft that turns like the Titanic to something a bit more maneuverable. I'm keen on the Naish 10'6 and would appreciate anyones opinion. My priorities are a board for the surf (nothing to big, up to around 4 foot) but one which the wife can still take for a paddle on the lake and maybe even throw the 3 year old on the front. I am also keen on the Naish because of the handle in the deck as I only live a couple of hundred metres from the beach and it makes it that little bit easier to carry. I saw on the Balmoral Boards site it says for riders up to 80kg (I'm 90 would that be a problem?)

Anyway I would appreciate your thoughts before I go and demo some options

Thanks Grant

Hey mate
Depending on your weight and if you only want a board for the surf then maybe the 9'6 Naish might also be a option.
I agree with Oliver buy From a Australian business

Ive had the 10'6 naish for a few months now and its what I learnt on. Goes well in the surf and Im really happy with it. Had it out lately every day in glasssy conditions. Not too sure if I would go any smaller unless you are Laird and co.Im 75kg so it suits me fine.90kg might be pushin it

I think you will find the 10'6" Naish too tippy to paddle with a kid on board.. and don't even think about the 9'6". (great board but won't handle two up)

Try the 11' NSP or the 10'10" Walden or even the 11'2" Starboard are about the only wave boards that you could paddle with a kid on board.. IMO

Maybe even the 11'4" Naish.. It's still big but surfs well for a big board.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.. .. If you want to be able to paddle with a kid on board you need a big board.

Not sure about that DJ we have heaps of people on both 9'6 and 10'6 who paddle with there kids and dogs on the front all the time it really comes down to weight and skill level. He has a 12 footer already so the best option would be as small as he can get away with so he can throw it around in the waves if he is only 65 to 75 kg and good balance then the 9'6 will do it no worries remember he wants it mainly as a surfing board. IMO

Hi
im swing between 88-91 kgs and 5' 10"
ive come down from 11' oxbow to 9'8" starboard after 8 months and its been perfect .
the starboard is as stable and floats as well as the oxbow but surfs great up to my limit 4-5 foot. The manouverability in positioning to catch waves is the real benefit as well as a lot less footwork.
Your wife will love it too.
Cheers

For a little bit more stability in the mid 10 foot range you could try the Starboard 10'5" or even the older wider tailed Star 9'8". 30" of width makes life pretty easy without any real downsides.

If you're unsure though you should paddle a few in that range to see how they work for you.

Sam.

I agree.. Weight.. skill level.. and also how calm the water is..

I've only paddled the 9'6" once and can't imagine paddling it with a kid on board.. but then I'm 90 kgs.. .. I'm sure it would be hard work and not much fun.

IMO if you want to go noticably shorter without losing too much paddle and stability then you really can't go past the starboard 10.5 x 30 - it surfs really well and paddles a treat and is incredibly stable. If you are near Sydney check out the starboard and naish range at wind surf and snow - they'll give you no b/s advice and they also have a demo 10.5 starboard I believe and a couple of naish's so you can compare the boards. good luck with it.

Thinking about it I 'll probably keep the 12 footer for the family fun times and concentrate on something for the surf. I don't really want to go below 10ft as I want it for surf on the smaller side ( if it picks up I'll just take the 9ft mal out). I'll go and have a look at windsurfnsnow its just up the road. Okay next question. Am I better of getting a custom I like to support local industry. Grant

Even though I need a smaller board the 11,6 naish is pretty good, surf's well for a big board, catches small waves easy, in 2-3 foot is a dream, might keep mine for the family, and me :)

Well I can answer 2 of your questions I have the 9 6" naish and am pushing 106kg and can balance and paddle It fine, It paddles excellent for a small sup. Also it would out perform any mal you put next to it, you better beleive this board rips, highly reccomend it. I f you wanted to buy Aussie I just got an 8 6" from boardbumps (rod) surfshapes, excellent quality and really good value But you may be waiting a while as he could be getting busy, pm him and have a chat with him. If you want one straight off the shelf go the 9 6" naish, you will never want to ride your mal again

I have a 9'6 Naish and I am 84kg can paddle, surf and balance find. However it is hard to paddle with my 3 year old sitting on it, I paddle it on my knees with her and we rid the small rollers. But my mates Starbord 9'8 x 30 is heeps better I can stand and paddle with her sitting or kneeling and we never fall in. Also surfs much better the the 11'2 starboard.Great all round Board.VERY happy with my naish and yes it turns faster than my Mal I have surfed it fron 1/2 a foot to 6foot great board!!
