Well after having the new board for a week and not much time on it, i finally caught some good waves on it this morning...stoked. I had only paddled it in the lake for about 1 hour on 2 occasions , and yesterday had a paddle with robdog at Bridgie in 3ft pushy surf for about 30 minutes. I still cant kneel due to my damaged knee from a few months back so its straight to my feet, i weigh around 105kgs and had no trouble in flat water but yesterday had trouble turning and standing, so after cracking it i raced in and got the kalama and left the 9 6" on the beach, i could stand and paddle for about 90 seconds then would fall in. Last night i said to myself give it a' real go' tomorrow . This morning i went to another beach that has a bit more power and bit more sucky, it was 2ft and peeling nice and quite powerfull for a small wave, i was able to stand and paddle and turn with not much trouble at all today (amazing what will power can do ) i caught some great little fast waves and was amazed how well this board turns and changed direction with the slightest movement of heel or toe. I was out for about 2hrs and had so much fun on this board, i know everyone says it but this board really is like a shortboard, i was able to take off side ways late on a couple of waves and just turn on the face under the lip, something you could not do on the kalama, it looks like the kalama might be getting retired i love this new 9 6" and cant wait to get it in some sizey surf. One thing though it absolutely works my whole body using it, feels like ive just gone 10 rounds with danny green, my calves, ankles , stomach and arms are all sore.

Nice one Brooko. I knew you'd love it - being a surfer and all.

You do get a lot more of a workout on a smaller board, hey? A constant struggle to maintain your balance. You (and your muscles) will get used to it though, I'm sure.

How nice is it going to go in 3-4 foot workable walls?

Hi All,
i would like to ask for your help.
I am from Germany. The problem here is, that winter season has arrived and the only surf shop that offers a try on SUP boards has closed already. In Germany SUP is not very common. To be honest it is almost impossible to find anyone to ask for advice.
Thats why I hope for your help. I am a kitesurfer for 8 years now with some good wave experience on strapless directional kiteboards and an Al Merrick Flyer. I want to start stand up paddling this winter. One reason is of cause riding waves when there is not enough wind for kiting or offshore conditions. The other reason is regular work out. I am living almost in front of a little lake. The boards I have in mind are 2009 Naish 9'6 and Naish 10'6''. I am just over 90kg. Waves are from 2ft to 5ft and not much time in between the waves. For one month a year I am traveling to Denmark. There the conditions offer best surfing conditions with clean waves from 3 to 6ft and enough time in between the waves. So what I am looking for is a board that is fast in turns for small wave riding, as well as good for a flat water work out and my holiday surfing in bigger waves. In Denmark I met a Paddler my size and weight riding the 2008 starboard extremist 9'8''. He says that this is the right board and also good for flat water paddling. A bigger size is not necessary. Since that day I have checked the we about information on the Naish 9'6''. One more important issue about the flat water paddling: My time on the water is limited. That means after one hour flat water paddling I want to have completed a full body workout. I do not want to paddle long distance or for hours. All in all I personally would prefer the 9'6'' taking into account what I have read in this forum.
As I cannot try these boards against each other, I would be glad to get your opinion before purchasing the 9'6. maybe you would rather recommend the 10'6 to me?
Many thanks in advance for your answers.

G'day Jens, Welcome to the breeze.

I recomend the Naish 10'6"..maybe even the new Naish 11'4".

IMO the 9'6" is too small for what you want it for.. The 9'6" is a wave only board.

If you want to use it for flat water/lake I think you need a bigger board.

You should try and demo some boards before you buy.

hi jens

it all comes down too

do you want a board that rides like a shortboard surfboard then the 9'6 is for you

or a board that rides like a malibu crossover that paddles better on flat water then the 10'6 is for you

i own a 10'6 and a few other boards and ride it the most and love it

but i recently tried the 9'6 and it preforms much better in the waves than the 10'6 hands down

the waves where smokin this morning 6/8 foot got a few nice ones but copt some alltime beatings going over the falls half a dozen times or so

gotta love that

Dog your an animal getting out for your comeback in 6-8ft surf, good work mate the old going over the falls beatings, how are those ones when 5hrs later your getting up off the couch and your nose just runs out half the ocean on your floor, you know you have had a good drilling when this happens jen i think dj is right , compared to the 11 6" kalama the little 9 6" is a pig to paddle in flatwater with hardly any glide compared to the big board, it is an awesome board for surfing but i reckon a bigger board would be better for what you want, go the 10 6" naish i reckon

Many thanks for your replies.
The problem here is, that you cannot demo as the sport is too new here. I will be one of the fews, who start doing it in Germany. I have to buy the black box anyway. So I am glad to get your feedback and that I can share your experiences. That lightens up at least a little bit of the story.
