A dream came true & I've just returned from a wild adventure up the west coast of Australia.

With plenty of toys - surfboards, kites, and of course a SUP, and visited some of the best spots WA has to offer...

Got lots of photos & video - here's a taste.

It's from the Abrolhos islands - we had 3 days of incredible calm weather before a strong cold front hit. The water was so still & clear, it was almost like it was not present.....

Keen as to upload more ... just flat out catching up with work at the moment.

Unfortunately, my waterproof camera became "unwaterproof" halfway through the trip, so resorted to mobile phone piccies and minimal water ones .. spewing .. skull cam works great, just can't share!

Yes, got some waves, but it was freaky. A really shallow coral reef full of sea urchins, so fully bootied up & wetsuit.

The waves were powerful, and when they got hold of the SUP, being dragged backwards by your legrope at high speed over a reef was .. well .. exciting?!

Where I was surfing it had no good surf on the shoulder area, so I went inside a bit - pretty hair raising stuff ... 80km's out to sea, a dodgy support boat and because the wave curled around this tiny island, there was no "safety" of being washed up on land if it went pear shaped. Sure keeps you on edge!

Took many photos with you guys in mind the whole time, so will get a yarn & piccies asap...

Ah I wondered who would get out there SUPn first.
I spent 4 months a year out there for 15 years cray fishin way back when.
Did a lot of surfin over there and there are some awsome waves to be surfed.

A Charter boat skipper got taken a couple of years back by Mr Chompy at one of the best surf spots. Same spot a couple of the boys got chased to the Island while surfin out there. They had to wait a while and then paddle the 1 km odd back to their boat to get home. Would be a fun paddle I imagine.
Quite a few good shark stories to be told by the fisherman around here. The Odds are still pretty good but its still a weird feeling surfing 40 mile out to sea.

There are a lot of charter boats work out of Gero that do surf trips to the Islands.
Some of the best divin and fishin in the world too.
Long way to go if its blowin so I would suggest ya take a kite or windsurfer as back up or it would be a boring trip.

More Photos...

These are mainly from the Easter Group, around Morley/Wooded Island where we took up a mooring to shelter from an incoming storm.

It literally was the calm before the storm. Three days of glorious calm, followed by three days of hard core 25-45 knots winds as they swung from NW to W to SW...

Great sunsets every day...

Flipper...

The Abrolhos Islands don't get much taller than this...

Look really close & you'll see tiny fish...

Water so calm & clear, it was like it wasn't there at all...

More coral...

.. and more coral...

The boat we travelled on...

More great sunsets...

Cray fishermen village on the Wallabi group...

Beautifull looking spot Laurie but it has a dark past , did you see any ghost from the Batavia shipwreck in 1629 even in the captains log book he noted powerful cylindrical waves breaking across the reef.

I can't believe how clear the water is.

We sailed with 200m of where the Batavia wreck is. The Abrolhos is a treacherous place for navigating without charts & GPS, as these coral reefs hide just a metre or so below the surface, and appear with little warning.

As you cruise around, you imagine what it was like for those crew - after being shipwrecked (as if that wasn't enough to ruin your day), there was a mutiny on the islands instigated by Jeronimus Cornelisz, with murder & rape the order of the day.

Read up here if you're keen: http://www.voc.iinet.net.au/batavia.html

There were many other shipwrecks, and reading about the ]Zeewijk
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ made walking around Gun Island amazing. Can't imagine how they survived for months on end, as the place is completely barren, but they did!
