You can adjust every direction & angle of them... I don't know that I'd use them - got enough sets that confuse me enough, already..

Yes, they have been around for a while.

I walked into a legend shapers shop one day and he had them in a board. I asked 'how do they go' he says 'well feeels a bit weird actually'.

I then pointed out that they were at different angles, positions and toe-ins.

If famous lifelong surfer/shapers can't get it right what hope do you have?

Other shapers I knew made a board with them 4 ways, played and played until they worked out that they had the fins in the right place to start with or made some small adjustments and then went back to what they were doing before.

They seem interesting and not bad product but people ruin boards with too much playing around with things.

That's funny - shapers will convince you to buy a new board where they tweaked the rails, planshape, rocker etc but the fins have to stay in the same place? I'd look for a new shaper....
The 4wfs is the only system that does what it does and I believe Imagine in the US is using it in their SUP's. I've retrofitted 4wfs to SUP's that wouldn't go, with good results.
The only downside of 4wfs is that it is not universally available, partially due to the fact that it is not universally available....you get the drift...

If you had to retro fit 4 way to SUP's that wouldnt go due to the fins maybe you need a new shaper.......

Any decent shaper will have a moving formula for proven designs that alleviates you having to move the fins around. As I mentioned, some of them even used 4 way to dial that in properly. Once it's sorted though that's where they want them to stay. They don't want people playing with that formula, I've seen with my own eyes what people will adjust to and then blame the board.

Don't get me wrong Peter, I have nothing against Dean or 4 way but they will have heard this a million times before and still try to work out why they don't sell as many as they think they will. The rest of the world has just ripped off FCS and made some coin........

Red X were adjustable, good solid base for fins but you shouldnt need to move fins at all and it was an expensive system. Set and forget unless you have a bigger problem......

Yeah all looks good , but I reckon a set of fins the size of JM's would rip right out of a Sup with that system. IMHO.

They're Universally available in Australia. Jed Done c/- Bushrat Surfboards is the supplier & is using them in his boards. Like the Red-X, they only have specialty fins to suit. I think the main priority of a Thruster setup was sorted by Simon A, ie: the outer fins point to the tip of the board. However, these could possibly be OK to tweak a board to your present surf conditions - similar to changing fins (as we do).

I have Red x in a few boards, they are good, a little bit of back and forward is good on the LB, you can still get the fins but gotta get them posted from the states. And there range is pretty **** now.

@CMC - it was production, one of the bigger brands.....and I did change brand

Your board should come with shapers markers for the shapers supposed ideal set-up - anyone should be able to reset to those after experimenting, so why deny them the option?

If you use different foils, you'll need to change your settings - especially if you are using twisted foils and the like. Unless, of course, you want to stick to your shapers recommendations....

I've used them heaps in kiteboards, even early kite raceboards, so durability is not an issue for SUP.

Dean should introduce a 4wfs box that is FCS compatible - it's doable and then the issues of availability are sorted
