Hey all we are newbies seeking advice on our first purchase of SUPS to use here in Yeppoon for me and the handbrake.
We are both fit asnd strong with good core strength but never used one before so any advice on which boards would suit us and if there is anyone who sells or custom makes them in Yeppoon.
Human specs:
Him 85 kgs 172 cms
Handbrake: 65 kgs 161 cms

Any advice would be appreciated!

Depends on intended use.
Flat water paddling, surfing, racing, touring etc.
Can you surf?
Don't know of anyone in Yepoon/Rocky who sells, you may have to travel down the coast to Sunny Coast/Noosa to check a few out and maybe have a lesson first.

We'll be using it for small surf and flat also, no can't surf to great yeppoon dosnt have the best surf, living 50mtrs from the beach and when the weather isnt much to good for spearing or fishing seems like a great idea to get the paddle board out.

Mate...i,d start off with just the one board....and maybe an adjustable paddle just so the both of you can get a feel for SUPing without spending thousands.....I was in the same position a yr ago, I had a lesson down at noosa and was hooked, as soon as i got back home (bundaberg) i did some research and got myself a board!..
Obviously living in yeppon, most of the time you will be just flat water cruising, with maybe the occasional surf down at five rocks...so maybe a board around the 9,5ft to 10,6ft range would be suitable.....Personally i,d stick with a production board for your first....Naish,Starboard,Fanatic,JP...etc..
best to look up their websites for more info.....(they tend to have better resale value for when u upgrade)
I ended up getting the STARBOARD whopper...10ft x 34in.... shes a very wide stable board, but it was a great board to learn to surf on and i could still go for a flat water paddle on it with my 3yr old boy sitting at front of it! (infact we just came back from 1770 doing exactly that).
If you have no kids....you probably dont have to go as wide....but its up to you...
cheers

Pat at 'Cap Coast Learn to Surf' stocks a few brands, NSP and Fanatic among others. Really good guy and not too bad on a SUP either!

With not much previous surf experience for a starting point I reckon stick to a bit of an all rounder, NSP in the 10 foot range or perhaps the Fanatic fly - based solely on the brands I know that he has. Boards of that style are pretty common, every manufacturer (big or small) has something in their range for beginners that they tout as an 'allrounder'. They do have the '71' brand packages at Rip Curl at the moment for about $1500 I am told, but I think there is better value sticking to a more reputable brand for quality of product and resale, and I think the cost would be comparable.

A few come up secondhand locally occasionally, you may jag something if you are not in a hurry.

Regards,
Scott.

If you don't want to look at a race board try a longer board (over 11 foot).
Will be fun in the smaller waves. Easy to get around the bays or up and down Lammermoor Beach. And you can go for some small downwinds.

Remember Farnborough Beach to the North of the resort gets some great waves when the surf is on and when the winds up you can have a great time at Emu Park.

As stated you have a LOCAL SUP provider so get in and see them.

Best advice I got here: Try before you buy.
Are there some not-too-far away places that do lessons/ demos?
Excuse for a road trip ?

I'm new, too.
Bit taller, lighter than your wife, but am really happy with a 2nd hand 9"10 X 29" board (~160L volume).
NOT what I'd have picked unless I'd tried one.
More stable than I'd thought.
Also, hated an 11".
Felt like a plank by comparison (I wasn't in surf).

Also, just bought a carbon, lightweight paddle
Best thing- makes a big difference to me (slightly weedy arms).

ALSO, try talking to someone over the phone.
Again, I might have got the wrong paddle if I'd just bought online without advice from someone who sells more than one type.

Good time to buy as many SUP schools getting rid of their summer boards to buy for next season.
$650-700.

I don't think you can go wrong mate. The Fanatic paddles often get a good rap in terms of value for money. I am still happy enough with the Carbon 40, looked at the 80 after I got mine and it definitely looks and feels better.

Let us know how you go.

Scott.
