Hi,
Just thought I would let you know what's been happening down on the tip of Africa.
We just had our first regional champs which was held in Cape Town with the local Longboard titles.
We had 20 competitors who stepped up to compete for the first SUP regional title.
Some of the internationally known names to be included was Ivan Van Vuuren (from Coreban), Gigs Celliers (World champ knee boarder and big wave charger), Peter Petersen (International Kite boarder) and a number of local chargers.

Here are some pic's of the event:

You can check out more pic's: http://suphq.com/index.php/news/local-news/174-wpchamps

Thanks for that Kingdom, great to check what is happening OS.

Interesting to see that they are riding more 'longboard' style SUPs in the comps over there - looking at the pics!

Was Nikki Carsens in it? I lived near Noordhoek for a couple of months in 84, magic area.

Great pics and good to hear whats happening over your way. I hear that sup is pretty big in SA and you certainly have some world class surfers/paddlers. I hope that as coreban start growing here in Aus that we get to see Ivan out here a bit more - he is an absolute freak on a sup and by all accounts a hell of a nice guy and great ambassador for the sport. Keep the pics and updates coming.

Yeah great pics we took a couple of Corebans away with us to png , I put one through the meat grinder on a few waves and was really surprised to see it pop out in one piece.

It would be a tuff heat to get out of if you got guys like Ivan in it.

Hey Kingdom, nice to see you guys getting organised.

Did any of the boys from Durban come up, or was it a Cape Town thing?

Gigs is ridiing a SUP now? Last time I saw him we were doing a tow mission in Gans Baai (which is a story in itself). When you see him tell him "Mad Mike" says Howzit. Ask him if he has fallen off a jey ski recently!

Keep sending news on whats happening over there. Might see you in CT next winter swell...

Yea the standard in the comp was really high and even then Ivan still was on a level of his own.
The boards in the 1st three shots are the new Coreban 10'0. These are the first few that the Coreban guys brought out to South Africa to test in our conditions. I have ordered one for myself already. Not sure when they will be available, but will let you know.

Most of the guys chose to ride "short" boards in the opening heats, but in the final the boards where between 9'3 and 10'0.

As this was a regional event only the guys in Cape Town competed. As the sport is growing at a phenomenal rate it won't be long before we have our own national titles that will attract the Durban based riders as well. Maybe we could have it a J-bay .... imagine 6-8ft J-bay and only SUP's

Mad Mike: Gigs has shaped his own SUP board and has been SUPing for a few years now since he first saw Laird in Maui. I am doing an interview with him next week so I'll put up a post as soon as it is done.

It would be great to see Ivan over in Oz, he really is a nice guy and the sport can only do well having guys like him around. Maybe we should be putting together a group of Saffer's to come over on a trip to Oz or get some of you guys over?

I am pretty sure we are going to see the new 9'0 and 10'0 Corebans here in Aus by the end of this month or early next month. The 10.0 looks insane and is definately making Ivan look good
Its been my life long dream to surf Cape St Francis (since seeing the original endless summer) so a trip to SA to sup the cape may be in order I think.

The good news is that Virgin now fly from Oz to RSA - and it's cheap! The Qantas?SAA monopoly is over! There are even more reasons why that surf trip over there is more doable than ever.

In your interview with Gigs ask him if he has swum under any ships lately. He will know what you mean...

He was a phenomenal knee boarder so if he surfs a SUP half as good as he can kneeboard he will be just fine.

I have been to SA a couple of times and the crew over there couldn't be more hospitable, had a ball on both occassions! Ended up spending 9 months in beautiful Capetown
