I'm gunna be there next week for a bit of a break.

Only two things I need to organise - a car and a sup would be good. Any ideas?

Hey Adolf,

In Cotton Tree give Johnno a call at Sunshine Coast Kitesurfing (http://www.sunshinecoastkitesurfingnsupfun.com/), Caloundra call Paul at Sunshine Coast Stand Up Paddle Centre (www.sunshinecoastsupcentre.com.au/) or in Noosa call George at Adventure Sports (www.kitesurfaustralia.com.au/).

All three areas have great spots for a paddle.

I can also recommend a good little motel, close to the centre of town if you want.

Let us know how you go.

There is a surf shop at the headland with SUPs for rent. I can't remember what it is called.

If those guys can't sort you out Adolf you could try Ocean Addicts in Maroochydore.
By the way you can't smoke in motels on the Sunshine Coast so you better get rid of that durri.

Alex surf.
Straight across the road from the "corner".
Fleet hire on Aerodrome road just 100 metres West of Mcdonalds is good for car hire.

Hi Adolf,

We have the only SUP lessons/hire permit at cotton tree and have the hire and lessons centre set-up every weekend on the river.
If you would like a board for the week, we can easily arrange drop-off and pick-up and look after you on a good price.

Give us a call at the shop on (07) 5309 6624

Cheers,

Marcel

Marcel's comment about having the only SUP hire permit at cotton tree is a little misleading. The council, in their wisdom, have issued only one permit to allow commercial businesses to actively operate on the water's edge. This in turn has hobbled other SUP businesses and made trading/teaching etc much more difficult for them. That does not mean that other shops are not in a position to hire you a board, at a competitive price. At the end of the day you should shop around for the best price.

The obvious problem is that if some shops get pushed to the wall, be it by council actions or something else, the SUP industry will end up like Woolworths and Coles.

You know that I would have said exactly that Sailryder.
That is if I hadn't turned over a new leaf a couple of weeks ago.
Well said.
Everyone deserves a chance.

We were up there earlier in the year and were told that the only boards going outside the river mouth were from OA (that's what we were told by the couple of shops that we went to).

Other than that, there's a small surfboard repair shop (Weir's Surf Shop) around the corner from the beach on Memorial Ave that hires out old mals & shortboards for spare change - nice guys too.
A couple of car hire shops are along Horton Pde from memory?

We stayed at the Mylos Apartments if you're interested too, not a bad dig & close to the beach & pubs!

Hi Guys,

Sorry if that sounded misleading, it was meant was meant with good intentions.

When I say only SUP hire / lessons permit, i mean permit to operate on the river. Yes there are definitely other stores on the coast that could help you with a hire.

Have a shop around.

Cheers,

Marcel

No worries Marcel. I wasn't having a go at you or the shop, in fact I find the staff at Ocean Addicts to be more than friendly and helpful. While I understand the commercial implications I just felt that people travelling to the Sunshine Coast need to be made aware that there are plenty of SUP/Kiteboard shops around for them to consider. Helps to keep things competitive, which in turn benefits us all.

I must say that I was disappointed to hear that the Council had issued only one permit. In fact I spoke to the local Councillor (Chris Thompson) about it and was informed that they are seriously considering adopting the Gold Coast model and stopping ALL commercial operations on public beaches. He stated that it was public space and everyone deserved to be able to use it without any restriction caused by a commercial operation. I am perplexed as to how they can limit SUP permits to one operator due to commercial impact on the use of public space, yet they still allow multiple operators to run their fitness classes or photography classes etc in public parks, or numerous surf schools to continue to operate unhindered.

Seems a little unfair to me.

Sailryder,
There is only one permit in Cotton Tree to use public space as a commercial operation.
However, other operators are allowed to operate freely as long as they do not have more than two clients. They can do this anywhere on the Sunshine Coast that they like.
There has been issues in Noosa recently and I am sure in other places. You can also operate with as many clients as you wish if you start and finsh your lessons from a private facility. For example if you lived in an apartment that had its own beach or jetty and you ran a SUP school and had the approval of your body corporate you would be fine.
Lots of rules out there.
