Does everybody use one?
Do you use it only for down winders and paddling or surfing too?

I probably sound very blond, but it has never occurred to me to use a PFD.

Hi stitch
The local WA maritime rules state you must wear a PFD type 1 when 400m offshore. I have spoken to the water police and DoT and they are totally realistic when it comes to surfers, but for downwinders we have to comply, which is both logical and sensible.
Invest in an inflatable PFD 1, they'll ping you if you have PFD type 2 and are offshore greater than 400m. They are reasonably priced around $90.
All Upcoming local ocean events will require a PFD type 1, except the doctor but hopefully they'll come round.

The way to ho would be an infltable type. Lots less volume etc. Just be careful because the legislation in NSW states you must have them serviced yearly or some similar B/S.

The inflatable type are great and have their place.. and I have one.. But in cooler conditions the normal type add warmth and they are also very visible from a distance and could mean the difference from water Police checking you out fom a distance and leaving you alone.. Or them coming over and making you stop while they ask about where's your PFD etc and even though you can show them and they will then leave you alone you still had to go though the hassle of it all.. You also can't carry a drink bladder, phone, food etc in the inflatable type.

@ David John, your Water Police sound like as big a pain in the butt as Maritime NSW!

The inflatable type have other obvious faults like are you going to be able to pull the cord during a heart attack? While you can get auto inflating models, the last thing you want is your vest going off like a car air bag the first time you fall off your board. Nevertheless, as you point out, they are convienient in warmer climates or where you are already wearing sufficient rubber.
