Its is confirmed that we will have an Australian titles this year. On the 23rd off August at Port Macquarie. looks like there is two spots from all states. so 12 total. selection will be from state titles in every state.

Its great the ball is now rolling.

How does that work. NSW for example doesn't have a 'State Titles' at this stage as far as I know.

Thats a good point goatman .... I 'm not aware of any sup state titles for NSW .... as I'm sure casso ,AA, sam ,dogman etc would be all keen to have a go at competing to represent NSW .

Mate our new club's first event could be the first NSW State titles at Narrabeen so guys like the dogman , Newcastle SUP ,AND OTHERS CAN COMPETE as most guys /not sure if theres a girls event so they Qualifiy for the AUSSIE TITLES.

Is there a distance race ? or just surfing.

This is great but I think it is a bit back wards.

I personally in my opinion would have to say that QLD have the best SUP surfers in the country at the moment - Qld have been doing it longer so it kinda adds up as to why we have more guys involved in SUP.

Just off hand we have about 7 - 8 top SUP surfers but we will only get two spots and NSW gets 3 WHY IS THIS?

In the last couple of events we have had NFoS 4 of the 6 Final spots (Dane Wilson, Billy Watson, Keahi de Aboitiz, Woogie Marsh) Malfunction 4 of the 6 final spots (Billy Watson, Woody Jack, Woogie Marsh, Nathan Myers)

What happens if a State or Territory does not have 2 SUP surfers (SA, NT, Tas) how gets dibs on there spots?

May be the Presidents of each newly formed SUP clubs need to step in and reallocate spots for the good will of the sport.

Stand Up Paddleboard Division:
For the first time in Australian Surfing history, an Australian Title for Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) will be decided at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival. The SUP division will be run according to the current ISA Stand Up Paddleboard Competition Rules. The SUP division will on one day only as part of the Australian Surf Masters Titles on Sunday 23rd August, 2009.

Please see the Australian Surfmasters Titles Allocations on the next page for State SUP division Allocations. Entry Fee will be $110.00 including GST. SUP competitors are to use the Australian Surfmasters Entry form and entrant details are to be submitted with each State’s Team Lists on the above specified date.

Event Allocations:
Please note all states are required to pay for their full allocation in entry fees unless they are filled by Surfing Australia or other State Branches.

"The SUP division will on one day only"

You have made some good points Jodie the sport is growing so fast it's now getting too big to be tacked on as a novelty event. The only way we can go from here is to hold our own local , state and national titles which is starting happening through Supsa and thats why we all need to get behind this and give it all our support.

2010 will be a big year for Sup in Aus. I don't have accurate sup board sales but I know in Qld alone this year it's in the 100's , Greenline sup shop has sold over 100 this year , that's just one store then you have Roar Industries , Honolua , Magic carpet , Surf FX , Laguna Bay , Dale Chapman ,Chris Garrett, Secret Agent , Dietz , the lists goes on ,plus all the local shapers are flat out and containers full of them are steaming to our shores.

This is just Qld and it's happening all over Australia NSW , VIC & WA will be just as big and I'm sure there is some gun riders in all those other states we haven't seen yet.

Big call by Jodie claiming Qld is the best as we have never come together , but until then go Queensland.

Kiakaka,
Your post puts me off already. Seen this attitude in other surfng sports before. How do you know all the good SUP riders are in QLD? The top 5 riders in Aust may be from WA. If you suggested the best 5 from each state, I would probally agree with you but being arrogant and assuming your state is the best (even if it is) is lame. Winners will rise to the top. Attitudes like this doom small sports before they can even start......

i do agree, the hard thing is that they are trying to be fair to every state. So the positive off this makes all states go and implement a State titles, to select a team. So in a way it forces all states to recognise this growing sport. It also gives the chance for some unknown surfers that don't chase comps as much to represent there state.

i do beleive that that some states will not have representatives, so there will have to be an alternate list as well.

All sounds positive, but don't you crawl before you walk?
Everyone is pushing the buttons for State Titles and Australian
Titles. How about we start from the start,Clubs yes we need a
hell of a lot of local clubs, they can compete against each other
then,we can host State Titles then we can host an Australian Title!
I really think you guy's are getting carried away with this Australian
Title thing! IMHO,yes I won the OZ title back in 09/10,all sound great
until you reveal how easy it was to win! Yes,I had to compete against
me local club, them against other clubs and I was selected to represent
my state to compete in the Australian Titles, know thats worth talking
about! If only two guy's from each state are able to enter the Nationals
sorry we can all get lucky on any given day!
My advice is simple,we need more time, don't rush into Australian Titles
for the hell of it!

Give it up. Are you suggesting what we need is a committee of silver/mid life crisis surfers who will debate everything from logos to the rules for the next couple of years? Inevitably they will come up with what's already going to happen

Come on Mac give the guys who got the ball rolling some credit.....

Well done guys - good on you for starting something up!!!!

So from what I can gather about this,is that the McCallister is going to be run in 3x weeks, and your calling for it to be the state titles? But what about the guys like myself who havent entered and do want to compete in the state titles???

Good idea Matty.

We probably won't get around to running our maiden "Sydney Paddle Surfing Club" comp until about July or August - which may be too late.

The Snowy is a national comp though with guys from all over Australia competing - which means that it's not a true test of NSW on NSW - but we can just take the highest ranked NSW guys, I suppose. Would have had to go to third place to get that from last year's Snowy.

I've been speaking to the guys at Surfing NSW (the hosts and organisers of the Aussie titles) and they were thinking at that stage that they would be looking at everyone's SUP results over the last year and picking the NSW team from that.

Not sure of the best approach for this year. Next year won't be a problem as I'm sure everyone will be a lot more organised.

Good point Robbo, it may be a bit late to announce that this comp will suddenly become the "State Titles".

Have entries closed?

Have any other ideas on how to choose the team for 2009?

Huge call about the best riders coming from queer land How do you make such a call ? are you even half serious? there are a couple of guys in wa that would straight up beat most people in aus hands down ( damon & courts) Maybe keep silly comments like that off the forum, how do you know who is good without seeing them ??

You're right MAC , but then again this sport and this forum are always ahead of itself - bring it on - there is nothing to lose, really?

BIG CALL! Maybe its because both events were held in QLD ? Not everyone can afford a week at Noosa. Can I humbly suggest that living in QLD you may be a bit biased? You RIP Woogee along with the other QLD'ers, but having seen the progression since last year in some other states, I think it will be closer than you think.

Just because you don't compete and sprout on this forum doesn't mean you dont rip!
But then again I don't compete and I don't rip but I do sproat on this forum, I'm confused?

Yeah, but its good friday night entertainment from up North. At least Woogee isn't afraid to call a 'spade a spade' - like someone else I know.

Yeah it will probably be messy and some will go away pissed off ( like every comp apparently) but it will be fun and one day we will look back with pure nostalgia and laugh at how seriously we took these early days.

Whatever I am thinking right now this sport is moving so fast, my opinion is already out of date!

And the glass is empty........

A lot of the rippers will never compete.

Scotty MCkircher (for example) is ripping and getting ridiculous barrels and SUP surfs better than most and it isn't even his first sport. I don't think it's possible to make a call on which state has the best guys. I saw a guy a couple weeks ago ripping harder than ANYONE I have ever seen (including youtube) and didn't recognise him. He wasn't at the Vic titles but had Vic number plates. I'm sure there are plenty of guys like this all over the country!

As for National titles etc I think it will happen as a stand alone event within 2 years, and quite possible sooner. BUT I rekon with these SUP clubs popping up we (as a united group) should look more at multiple day events with a relaxed atmosphere along the lines of the Mambo windsurfing event. There would still be winners but no loosers!

Some boardrider clubs in Vic now only have social events as comps scared members away. I don't know!?! Keep it FUN for the next couple years I rekon!

Good to see you boys getting some fire in your belly. I am glad every time I come on this forum and say something I get a great response.

Maybe I should have but it a bit different in the way that way is it only two from each state - why not 6 from each state.

If it is only going to be held on one day (memories of NFoS AA comments coming back to mind) why not make if worth while.

Remember brooko it is my opinion and I can say it how it is, if you don't like it done read it.

Sorry for putting you off Scotty I don't think it was a lame comment I am just trying to get SUpers attention that we are getting ripped off when if comes to events.

AA - Malfunction was held in Kingscliff NSW but for those that came to Noosa can see it as being a mission to get time off. Even more of a mission when you are self employed.

Freestyle, now that is THE WAY TO GO! Being judged by your peers over a number of sessions has way more going for it!

The MAMBO event opitimises the 'freestyle' format and is one of the best events I have been involved in - totally 'Freestyle' over 3 days.

Your attitude and performance counted both in the surf and on the dance floor. If you ripped but it up in the surf and wanked around on dry land, guess what - you didn't make the cut!

Don't recall too many QLD'ers coming dont for the Mambo?
Maybe they knew their attitude wouldnt get them high enough in the rankings haha LOL Sorry, Wooge I had to throw that one in!

It may be a bit loose for State titles, but the freestyle element on the water was the key.
One respected judge from each state and away you go.....

I would love to look back in 10 years time and see a sport that stepped up and decided to do it differently.
