Freestyle, now that is THE WAY TO GO! Being judged by your peers over a number of sessions has way more going for it!

The MAMBO event opitimises the 'freestyle' format and is one of the best events I have been involved in - totally 'Freestyle' over 3 days.

Your attitude and performance counted both in the surf and on the dance floor. If you ripped but it up in the surf and wanked around on dry land, guess what - you didn't make the cut!

Don't recall too many QLD'ers coming dont for the Mambo?
Maybe they knew their attitude wouldnt get them high enough in the rankings haha LOL Sorry, Wooge I had to throw that one in!

It may be a bit loose for State titles, but the freestyle element on the water was the key.
One respected judge from each state and away you go.....

I would love to look back in 10 years time and see a sport that stepped up and decided to do it differently.

AA
Love that idea, now lets go surfin??

Give it up. Are you suggesting what we need is a committee of silver/mid life crisis surfers who will debate everything from logos to the rules for the next couple of years? Inevitably they will come up with what's already going to happen

Come on Mac give the guys who got the ball rolling some credit.....

Well done guys - good on you for starting something up!!!!

Hey Oliver, why should I give it up? Its just my opinion. At no stage did I discredit any of the guy's! Matter of fact I totally support SUPSA,tomorrow will be my second attendance in a month at our SUPSA local day!
As I said,Get the clubs up and running and SUPSA has (just formed) Then run the State Titles and then Nationals with more than two competitors per state and run it over a weekend at least! mac

I am glad to hear that you guys are organizing. I do, however believe that it is a bunch of crap to think a region(s) should be left out simply because nobody thought to give them a heads-up call (or perhaps it was thought of and decided that it would be easier to win without the extra competition)!
Here in Florida, I am having trouble finding out about SUPsurf contests. It is almost like people are scared to invite real competition from out of town. I have emailed every surfshop I could find regarding contests and have only received 2 ("I'll check") responses. I hear about most events after they occur. SUPsurf, at the contest level, is so far behind here.
I am currently trying to get some sort of sanctioning body (i.e. E.S.A.) to recognize SUPsurf as a valid division. Right now, it is still somewhat of the novelty nature.
One of my biggest gripes is that there is no amateur ranking setup.
I posted this on the Zone:
"At the contests I have competed in(4), SUPsurf was well received. The sport is growing fast. I am now competing against professional surfers. It is only a matter of time before SUPsurf is recognized at the professional level. The pros do not get the opportunity to become professional without going through the weeding-out process of amateur events.
It is a shame that a dedicated SUPsurfer would not be able to climb the ranks within a sanctioned amateur organization and gain sponsors along the way in order to achieve pro level.
Without the amateur process, the development of competitive SUPsurf will be in the hands of those who's true focus is another modality and who, more or less, dabble in the sport at the request of their mega-sponsors.
The die-hard SUPsurfer is left out of the equation..."
~My hat is off in respect to those who strive for a comprehensive system. My pants are down, in full moon mode, to those who would hope to make it an exclusive club. Perhaps I am full of it. I readily admit that I do not know much about the politics behind the machine. I am coming from the underdog perspective and I call it like I see it...so far, at least here, it looks like $hite!

well stirred jodie[}:)],that might get a reaction from the too hard basket boys in nsw.wa.sa. to start their own associations(clubs)i am sure they can find a silver haired midlife crisis old fart to set one up because sure as s**t the young guys cant do it. oliver,i had my midlife crisis 20 years ago,i would imagine you are yet to discover the joys of this, good luck when it happens.i am still surfing, and loving it ,after 50 years,i reckon i can put something back into a sport that has given me so much pleasure.
we didnt debate logos,or rules or have bulls**t meetings to start noosa club,we just did it,stop talking and get off your a**es and start one,we wont get a look in into surfing australia until we are one voice and we sure as s**t cant do it with out them, its all about insurance and they get the best deals because of numbers,
2 from each state is all we will get because we are not united,we are an add on event thats why it will only be one day,we are lucky we got that.
byw.dont forget you are only dealing with sup surf events, what about the race crew, same sport different genre.our club deals with all aspects of sup, what will your club do?

Hi Fives Drewsta and Kiakaha,

I think the reason most people SUP is FUN, the response to the FUN day at OG is because its a social event not a comp.

We have people attending from VIC, SA, QLD and now NSW.

I think guys actually RIP better in an expression session rather than a comp!

We have guys in Vicco that could easily compete with anyone in the country but you will never see them at a comp, they just love the sport!

We have a Matt down our way who is in his mid 50's and he tears it apart at 13th on a 9'3 naish, even the short boarders give this guy respect at Beacon. Balls like a bull elephant and style to match.

He recently rode some EPIC waves at the Ant Bombie along with DB and The Murphmiester.

He always comes out of the water with a smile on his face no matter how bad the surf is! Maybe that makes him the best??????

the bottom line will still have us being affilliated with surfing australia[}:)],thats just the way it will pan out, they want our money and we need their insurance and until we get together and we have no australian body(supsa is just a goldcoast club) we will have to do it their(Surfing australia)way.as we get stronger it will happen but not this year
