Current City:Haiku, Maui, Hawaii
Boards: ACE 14' , RACE 12'6 x 27.5” , PRO 8'5” x 29”, GUN 10'3” x 28.5”, K15
Paddle: Enduro carbon 475
What competitions/events are you looking forward to next year?
International race events like, French, Jever world cup in Germany, 11-city tour in Holland, Rottnest Island Australia and the Battle of the paddle in Hawaii and California
What was your best day on the ocean this year?
Probably last march, I was out on a big day when almost the whole North Shore was closing out. It took Mikes Eskimo and me 30 minutes to get to the outside in Kuau. We told ourselves it would be a one wave deal. The freak sets were breaking far out, so it was hard to position ourselves. I got lucky and had one of the best and biggest waves I ever had. The best days on Maui are the days when it is too big to surf but still doable on a Stand up.
What is the craziest thing you experienced this year?
Being chased by Hippos on the left and crocodiles on the right on the Lower Zambezi river in Zambia ( Africa) while we were paddling there.
What paddling related accomplishment are you most proud of?
Winning the 11-city tour in Holland this year on a K15. 220 km of hard work.
Tell us one thing that no-one knows about you?
I don't ever drink alcohol or coffee.
What are your plans for the 2010-11 year?
Race hard both flatwater and open ocean and do some crazy SUP adventures I am working on.
When you were coming up, what paddlers inspired you?
Connor Baxter, Byron Kurt, Robby Naish. I get inspired by everyone who loves life and makes the ocean their playground.
What charities are you involved with?
Mostly local Maui charities, to help the community were they need it most.
Why did you choose Starboard?
The team behind Starboard is very supportive and they make the best boards on the market. With this year's board line Starboard covers everything from flatwater racing to open ocean racing and there is a huge wave selection.
Tell us about your quiver? / Which board is your favorite?
Big waves, the new GUN 10'3”, smaller waves the PRO 8'5” and for racing the ACE 14” on flatwater and the new RACE 14' for open ocean racing.
SUP has given you the chance to travel the world. Out of all travels, which one has been the most memorable?
I just got back from Zambia, which was definitely one of the best trips ever. Paddling between the hippos, crocodiles and elephant, just meters away, was amazing. Paddling at the Victoria falls a huge bonus.
If we pressed play on your I-Pod what song would be playing?
Most likely a mix of Jack Johnson, Johnny Cash, Xavier Rudd and Nickelback.
