This should make things interesting, less crowded final anyway.

The Elite Race
Saturday September 24, 2011

The Battle of The Paddle features an offshore course that will challenge competitor's technical, surfing and athletic skills. Elite Race competitors will race on SUP Class 12'6” boards and will compete multiple laps of an off-shore circuit that will include an exchange area where they must beach their equipment for a short sand run around a course flag.

Qualifying Heats:

This year the race will be conducted with morning qualifying heats that allow racers to advance into the afternoon Elite Race final.

Qualifying heats include men & women.

Each qualifying heat will advance up to 25 men & 10 women racers into the Elite Race final. Heats #1 & #2 will be seeded using last year BOP CA's Elite Race top fifty results.

If your 1st through 50th 2010 result is an odd number you will be in Heat #1. If your 1st through 50th 2010 result is an even number you will be in Heat #2.

All other entries will be randomly selected into either Heat #1 or Heat #2.

Race Schedule (both men & wahine)

Heat #1 START @ 9:00 A.M.
Heat #2 START @ 10:00 A.M.
Elite Race Final START @ 2:00 P.M.

Course:
The course is around all buoys as directed by the Beachmaster/starter. At no time during the race may a competitor impede another competitor. Unsportsmanlike conduct/actions will result in disqualification. Any competitor failing to round all buoys will be disqualified from the race.

For morning qualifying heats: paddlers must complete two (2) laps around the designated course and exchange area. Event race distance is approximately 2.0 miles. At the finish, leave your board on shore, run through exchange area to the finish line in control of your paddle.

For the Elite Race Final: paddlers must complete three (3) laps around the designated course and exchange area. Event race distance is approximately 3.0 miles. At the finish, leave your board on shore, run through exchange area to the finish line in control of your paddle.

This seems like a smart move and will make the live coverage more comprehensive as the commentators and director will not be able to waste half the race on paddlers at the back of the pack who happen to be sponsors or organisers or members of the Napoleon clan. In the Hawaii BOP race this year, we saw the front 4 racers for a while, but then we saw way too much of uncompetitive legends like Gerry Lopez who were just there for the fun of it. Would be nice to see the elite paddlers running from 5th to 20th and maybe, just maybe, some of the best women competitors as well.

I assume if they pick 25 guys from 2 heats they must pick the 25 fastest blokes by time and not by finishing order in the qualifying heat?

That might not be so. What if conditions changed between heats? The times would be skewed.

Question..............is this all just getting a little competitive, in a former life, i would swim the summer ocean series, when there would be an event (note that word) every couple of weeks and not like now when there are 3 or 4 swims every weekend from September to May.

Yes we had elite swimmer, stars even but then we had the big blokes at the back (thats me) who were doing it just for the challenge and the fun to hang with your mates afterwards.

Whilst i appreciate those that go in it for the win and train everyday for the event. Am I missing something are there big blokes at the back on the non flash boards that are competing to do something all your mates think you are part mad to do

From what I have seen in my little exposure to this new sport its either your competing for no 1 or not at all?

Pls enlighten me

i don't know about nsw, but there are plenty of races up here that are for everyone. even our training group hold in house handicap races. now they are fun

cheers

ps i went up for a race up the sunny coast. part of a flatwater series. i must say i was impressed the way everybody got together and are working towards a goal, the backmarkers really dug in and were part of it too

Fair point.
Just seem odd they would pick 13 from one heat and 12 from the other at this stage.

Yeah I hadn't thought of that. However, they wouldn't need to seed the heats into odds and evens based on last year's results if it was simply a time trial. There must be some importance to where you place in each heat.

I think if the seeding was gone and it was a time trial, the guys wouldnt be happy. Imagine for exemple if the top25 is in one heat and going super fast and the rest struggling in the 2nd heat... it wouldnt give the guys in the 2nd heat much chances to make the final.

Anyway I think you sussed it out before... placing in the two heats determine the final, not time.

Just re-read the OP again and yeah you're right, that makes sense now. To quote:

"Each qualifying heat will advance up to 25 men & 10 women racers into the Elite Race final."

Are we going to see what is happening in the Formular One car races where Manufacture Teams work together to get their respected number one man across the line first?
Could this lead into the Board Companies forming team alliances to do the same?

What about more like a Tour de France team. Where you have the domestique/s to do all the hard slog and then the team's number one jumps out of the slip stream at the last minute.
