I've Been in Maui now for a couple of days. Surprised how many sups are around. Really lucked out with the conditions- swell has jacked right up and the wind is virtually non existent. I'm here with the family and have spent some time seeing the sites and saw some incredible big clean waves in Honokohau Bay this arvo.

I'm pretty sore right now from surfing the now chest high glassy soft right outside our apartment, that I've had pretty much to myself - I realy can't get enough of it. The thought of going in for water and sunscreen worries me that the waves will drop off. I ended up hiring a pig of a board, but at least it's stable and works - just heavy as all hell.

Don't know if I would like to stay here for too long or even if I'd come back - there seems to be lots of negative vibes, not really the aloha I remember from years ago. However, I've always thought the best thing about going overseas, is that you realize how good we have it in Australia.

Google 'Maui' and then select images in the top right hand corner.

One strange experience I had was when I bought a shirt in Wakiki. I tried lots on and the one that fitted me was extra small - WTF? Made me wonder if Jonothan needs to go to boyswear, when he shops for clothes here.

SandS,
Yeah, Dave's site is a pretty good one isn't it. Some great pics, and stories, and tips.
I like his Site Subtitle too;
ADVENTURES IN STAND UP PADDLING, SURFING, OCEAN VOYAGING, AND LIFE
Just got back home from an absolutely stunning paddle in Torquay, putting around from Fisho's out to the tip of Pint Danger Reef on a 0.15 Super Low Tide. Seems like there is 3 acres of reef on display, with fluro green seaweed which only sees the light of day a few times per year. Oily glassy water surface... Stingrays, fish, .... the sunset....

The GFC has hit the US pretty hard and life doesn't seem as easy as it once was here. As a tourist here I feel like a commodity. Much more than I would almost anywhere in Australia. Crime, so I've been told, is a problem, and from my limited experience, there are definitely places you want to avoid.

On the surfing side of things, the hire board I got was expensive and sub standard. I'm sure if I did my research better, I could have got something much better. Ive been only paddling out directly in front of our apartment - it's a tourist precinct, and by no means a premium break, and have copped stink eye. Ive also found some of the US mainland tourists here are pretty arrogant, which may explain the lack of Aloha.

If I was to compare Maui with somewhere in Australia, I don't think Byron Bay would be too far off the mark - similar vibe, similar cost of living, similar weather, scenery, beaches, maybe similar crime, but i recon Byron is genuinely more friendly. Not what I expected.

The American culture is interesting, but if I was to plan an overseas holiday to a pacific island again I'd probably choose an island in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, NZ, maybe Kaui is more what I was expecting.

Hi Oliver, sorry to hear about the negative vibe, where are you surfing? Have you been around to Puuamana and Launiopoko and Thousand Peaks. Send PonoBill - pretty sure he is on SeaBreeze a PM and go surfing with him, he is great fun and always looking for someone to do something on the water with. He is on the Zone for sure and knows Fireman Dave and me well.

Funny you say that about the clothes sizes, I must admit I've picked up some real bargains in the kids section of the Sports Mart equivalent!

Being with the family it's not that easy to be anything but a tourist. Everyone has loved the shopping here, clothing and alcohol are incredibly cheap. I have been very lucky with the conditions - yesterday I would say was perfect. I guess that when you shell out 12k for a holiday and as I get older, grumpier, and maybe wiser I can't help comparing apples with oranges.
