Newbie to SUP (5'11" tall and weigh about 86kg) seeking advice on best board 10'0" and under for flat water and later on for waves up to 3'0", choices are:

- Starboard Hero 9'0"
- Starboard Element 9'8"
- Starboard Whopper 10'0"

- Naish Hokua 9'6"
- Naish Mana 10'0"

I'm a crap surfer with good balance and would also like my wife to try out the board.

Thanks

Paul

My vote goes for the 10' Mana.. (of course)..

You can also add the new 10' NSP to that list.. It would be good board if you're only light.

I just sold my old 10' Mana to a old windsurfing mate who wants to get into SUP.

I've ordered myself one of the new Bamboo Mana's.. .. I can't wait.

Here's a couple of pictures of my old Mana.. It paddles flat water great for a wave board.

I would forget the element & the whopper Gizze has a Hero he is a big boy
we paddle some distance to one of our local surf breaks , I have an Element
& he leaves me be hind . 2010 Element has a lot more rocker.
I think DJ is on the money.

I have the 9'5" Mana and and I'm 90kg can surf but poor balance. I find in fine in both surf and flat water (push the fin right back) my wife who is only 60kgs has no problems paddling in in flat water.

I have never tried the Starboards but hear good things about them. I'm sure you will enjoy what ever you get. They are all good boards.

if you want a great board that has good stability and very responsive then go the starboard whopper. There is more to a board than simple dimensions such as technology in design and construction. This board paddles straighter in flat water with surprising glide for a wide board and will let you get into waves right away with some confidence. My wife has never surfed and is catching waves on one too. As for the kid factor they will dig it too. Enjoy its a great sport! Oh and paddles?...dont forget the paddle it is just as important... check out coreban.com too...they also do nice boards and their web site is a great resource of vids and info.

Above is a link to a recently shaped board, over 10 feet. I think Paddle Surf Hawaii have a 12'0 or 12'6 board coming out, that is orientated to both flat water cruising and surf.

Have a think about where you are planning on storing it, and if you can store a 12'0 or 12'6, they may also be worth having a look at....

Or, if you have the spare dollars, just grab either 10'0 Naish or 10'0 Starboard today, and get out there this afternoon on some flat water, and start having fun !! Then progressively try other boards....

Here's Dave paddling, take a close look at his technique, and imitate it in front of the computer !! Also, when you hit the water, look out at the horizon to help keep balance...

I found the whopper not too bad in flat water (try burying the rail as deep as you dare on each paddle stroke to minimise drag by lifting a lot of the rest of the board out of the water) & a great family toy & yep it almost surfs itself on waves

I have paddled all all the boards you have listed and surfed most of them and the starboard 9.8 is hands down the best allrounder of the lot. It is a nice paddler and surfs unreal. It is also very light to carry. Forget about the hero and whopper as paddlers as they are bloody awful in the flat due to their width and rocker. At your weight the 9.8 will be a nice board to progress onto in the surf and they are also probably one of the best ladies boards ever to hit the water. (IMO)

Probly true billboard....the narrower the board the better for flatwater really....still quite fancy my bonga 10 foot on the flat but now my 12 foot mickey munoz is my current flirtation.......26 & a quarter inches wide. Still you wouldn't slap the wife on it & push her out to sea if she'd never surfed before lol

10' Mana.

Easy, safe, Fun.

I paddle with my 2 and 3 year old kids on it, and recently my dog. My wife loves it. I can do distance on it without really dragging along. Surf really well for it width too!

Try the 10' x 30" Fanatic. Flatter rocker line than most and glides sweetly as a result.

Nice cruisy surfer also but not as loose as some though.

Fantastic mate - you will not be disappointed. They are an insane board and you will find it so easy and fun to get into supsurfing with this board. Looking forward to hearing your first review.

Paul,
Nice choice, you'll have a ball on the element. I've got one too, paddles nicely on the flat & surfs well. When you get into the surf you may want to try some different fins as the stock sides aren't that good. Try some M7 or M5's on the sides & go for a smaller centre, I use a futures 4.5" centre. Get out there & have fun.
