I've just been comparing a Coreban Rocket

www.coreban.com/rockett.html

and a Starboard Drive

http://www.star-board-sup.com/2010/products/boards/board_thedrive.php

They seem very similar in shape but in reverse !!. The Coreban has a wide tail and a pointed nose and the Starboard a pin tail and a wide nose.

I guess both will perform differently but both are designed for a similar purpose ie surfing. I'd be interested in some feedback on how these boards go if you own one.

I am assuming wide tail, more rocker and narrower nose will allow steeper wave take off and surfing. Wide nose will help with glide while the pin tail promotes easier turning

Good question.. I'm guessin' that one would perform more like a short board and one more like a long board.

My mate has the Coreban 10-6 rocket , the pulled in nose really lets the board hang in on the sucky stuff and comes down nicely off the lip , it has extra meat in the tail to make up for stability which can make it slide if you are too heavy on the back foot but it's east to adjust for it . The starboard is an easy board to stand on with the wider nose and turns really well with the pulled in tail but the wide nose tends to catch in critical situations , it's really a choice of how you surf.

Both nice boards but if you want my vote I will go a pulled nose any day regardless of brand.

Which would be better at catching a wave.

The wide tail which would get better lift from the wave behind.
or
The wide nose that would might allow faster paddling speed to catch the wave

Thanks

My guess is the wider nose because you can put more weight forward.

Hi Daneli,
I was riding a 7S uberfish which has a really wide nose. My experience was that it made the board very stable in chop but take off on any wave with a little bit of steep and it would nose dive. I finally got sick of it and found another board that flows heaps better (PSH 9-2 allrounder).

Good luck

Very hard to generalise about nose shape IMO when there are so many other factors. My 8'5 Starboard Pocket Rocket has a very rounded nose and I was sure it would pearl with late steep drops but it just doesn't. I did really like the pointed nose on my old 9'6 Naish though (or was it just the board I liked?) but it was too big for me. Funny thing the 8'5 seems more stable than the 9'6 Naish in choppy waves.
