Those Surf Shapes boards are made by Rod Hocker. He is a regular poster on here under the name Board Bumps. They are great boards and Rod is a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to shaping. He always takes the time to answer Q's whether on his own boards or SUP shaping in general.

And no, I'm not associated in any way with the brand, blah blah blah get over it

boarder paul, I couldn't work out if "steep deck" is a misprint or if that's how you people say "step deck". If it's the latter shouldn't it be "steep deek"?

According to his profile, Rod hasn't visited the Breeze for about a month. Hope he is OK. Can anybody shed any light?

I would say he would be in his cave working his fingers to the bone trying too catch up on all the orders he has, when your shaping the best boards around your bound to be super busy

No doubt few people have ordered gear n waiting for a response from Rod. Said he was having computer problems.
Shame if he has gone to ground due to too many orders.
I also have a board ordered.

I guess I'm just frustrated. When I first started thinking about a new board in March and asking on the breeze for some opinions, Rod PM'd me straight up with some options and a 10 day turn around. Seems things have certainly changed since then and he has got real busy. All I want is an answer to how long I would have to wait and if I can't get that I'll go elsewhere

I feel ya pain mate, I realy do

My new board psh Got damaged in freight and a repalcment was three months away. Not prepared to wait that long.

I to decided to look into the surf shapes but no reply.

I have no hard feeling towards the shaper but it would be real good if he or someone can let people know if he is on the scene or not

He may not be all that tied up and may loose a few orders because of peoples frustration.

So again it would be good if we could be told what his case is.

I myself have lost faith is getting any responce.

Might just go to my local shaper here in nz and hope all turns out well.

dont loose faith. rods good people. he lives in the sticks and has 2 floods and a heap of god know what else thrown at him in the last couple of months.
if you get stuck. theres always a "hump master" waiting for you. freight to the east of aus is not a hassle.

Hi Guys,

In my experience custom boards take a lot of time. When I had Kristiana's and Nesha's made it took Dave about 12 weeks each time with other production on at the same time. We wanted pigment hand laid etc. Dave wasnt flooded out twice, lost his local comms or blew out his back etc etc either.

Rod from what I saw was a man with integrity and maybe a little more patience is necessary.

I am sure that Rod, Dale, Stuey etc all have the same production issue. There is only one of them and they can only do so much.

I laugh when I have seen all the comments about everyone should get Aussie shapers to supply thier boards. The simple fact is they dont have anywhere near enough production capacity. The other way is they go overseas like everyone else. Hmmmmmmm isnt that interesting!

Down this way, glassers are in short supply, polishers are in short supply and quality shapers are all but extinct.

If they put on more people with Aussie labour costs guess what your back to 1600 - 1800 a board and no individual attention to detail.

Is surf shaping a good career? Here's what this website (http://getaccess.wa.gov.au/careers/profiles/data/OCC270.asp) says:

"The starting salary for shapers is about $25,000 per year and this may go as high as approximately $40,000. Generally, a surfboard shaper will charge approximately $70 per shape. If they also possess the skills required to perform the finishing of the board, further charges apply. As Mark says, ''It's more about a lifestyle than money. No one works in this job that doesn't surf.''"

Maybe the website is a bit dated, but it sounds to me as though shapers do it for the love as much as the money.

Now, why aren't there hand shaped Indonesian boards flooding our market - I would have thought there's a business opportunity for someone with some Aussie design skills AND the kahunas to risk their dollars? And plenty of R&D in some great surf for the team?
