So what is the story with all the boards coming out on the market?? It seems that every man and his dog is now a board designer, from BG, Graffiti surf, Illusion (or should I say delusion) to the true Aussie one of Southern Cross (who has a shot of every other brand on there cover page except there own)....... All seem to be offering an amazing board and paddle and bag package too good to be true and as i have been taught if it sounds too good to be true is usually is.

I ask you where is the research and development where are the team riders, sponsorship, putting into the sport and where is the integrity in there product??????

Make a stand and support the quality items out there, don't let the quick buck cowboys get a foot in the door and destroy the sport and industry. If you can give anyone advise on the right boards to buy that advise would be to buy some thing that come from a reputable dealer or at least a shop.

It will be interesting to read your thoughts............

Some of the best surf boards and sail boards I have ridden have been from small builders who do the lot themselves, no money for team riders and like that you seem to hold so dear.

Don't mean to be cynical, but I am left to wonder what your real motive to this, your first post, might be?

It seems PSH can offer similar prices to Hawaiians as these guys seem to be able to.

My Ride is a Laguna Bay 9'6" and a Naish 12'0" glide, but I have had a few other boards as well, the motivation for the topic is the number of people rocking up to beaches peddling there pop out boards from the back of a van and doing the surf shops out of a sale, oh and I guess you have worked out by this I do work in the industry. And no real agenda but interested in the general feeling out there.

I think a lot few of you are missing the point, I am all for the shaper that works for the small factory , the guys who are in it for the love of the sport it is the guys who are getting a container load of boards with dimensions of boards that have been ripped off from a shaper that has done the ground work, the guys flogging there second rate boards to the general punters looking at getting in to the sport. And as for the guy who's surf shop is a cloths boutique.... You really got to get out more, please don't take it personally Tux no harm intended but the mark up on Myers or DJ's clothing is usually about 150% so in a surf shop 100% is cheap unless your one of the bigger ones that is also making the stuff then double that.

Why do people get so uptight about someone buying cheap chinese boards,if that same person cant be bothered to do there homework,tough,and if they are satisfied with the price they pay for the quality they get surely thats there affair.

Im currently ready to purchase my first SUP board and have discovered the "cheap" chinese boards and if I decide to go with this option look to save $400-$500. The next step is to find out just what I get for my money....

froggo,perhaps a good secondhand brand name or custom,would be a better choice,being a newbie you will need stability for you first, plenty to choose from and i reckon most second hand boards are negotiable and re- sellable unlike no name boards,

I recommend the NSP SUPs. They worked for me when starting out.

NSP 11ft is very very hard to go past. Great board to start out on and they actually surf pretty well also as you progress. They are a stable and fun board for all sizes/ages/abilities. I have not seen many of these second hand since they arrived on the scene a couple of years ago and there are sooooo many getting sold, so I reckon every second sup home must have an nsp in the garage. I guess this makes this board one of the really good cheap asian popouts hey !! So when does a cheap asian popout become a GOOD one ?? Subjective isn't it. Just as a matter of interest - a mate of mine owns a premium brand aussie made sup and also a beaten up 12ft maverix logsup that we have all written off in the past year or so. On most days he actually enjoys riding the maverix more because it is a big heavy cruisey fun board and he doesn't have to be precious about it cos it cost him sh#t to buy and he just loves the big beast. At the end of the day people are gunna buy what they can afford and if it does the job for them then - great - everyones happy. If though they buy a cheap and nasty piece of crap that falls apart in three weeks then that is a decision that they will have to live with and hopefully they learn from it. Whether people are new to sup or not they have enough common sense to know that if you are buying something new - say a new car or other expensive item - then you would buy it from a retailer and not from some dude in the carpark at the beach or over the internet. It really goes back to the old saying hey "if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is".
Anyway enough of my dribble - Merry Christmas everybody - safe and happy new year to all of you.

The difference is if you buy a locally produced product you have the backing and integrity of the local owner/s who stands behind the quality and performance of their product.
Having recently had a Laguna 11ft4" perfomance SUP made for me, i wish to congradulate Tully and his crew at Laguna for underwriting their product.
I am happy with the end result. I now have a quality performance board especially designed to suit me and backed up by integrity.
Yes give all the support you can to your local shops. Go local. Because the flood of cheap Chinese ain't gonna stop. Some of our "name" manufacturers are succumbing to the greed ie: To make one, Shape one, Mould one, Brand one. Get Chinese workers receiving 20 cents a day to build and hey big fat profit. This is to the detriment of our locally manufactured market, and yes you guessed it JOBS. And we are all guilty of it. Yes keep up the good work and save a couple hundred bucks now but ultimately we are just selling our future.
