After spending the day at Point Roadnight (first ever SUP day in genuine surf) which followed about 6 morning sessions on the Yarra River, I've reached the conclusion that the brand new Naish Glide 12' has to go. I'm just not using it for what it was intended so it was a bad choice on my part. Now I just have to figure out a way of offloading this board asap and scoring myself a Starboard Sport Tech Blend or Naish Mana. Maybe Seabreeze could use a "Swap" section to add to the Buy & Sell section. Has this been suggested before?

I reckon keep the Glide and swap the 11'6" for a 10' Mana..

If I had two boards that would be them.

You will regret offloading the 12'6 when you go on your first decent downwinder. The glide is also great for those dead still days and makes a terrific ripple rider. I'd keep it and trade the 11'6 for something that's more surf orientated.

Hi PTWoody,

Like me you are a light guy, I'm not sure you need something with as much volume as the Mana. I haven't tried the Mana and I realise that you aren't going to be burying the rail for a while but I would be a little careful about going too fat. While the 12' Glide is not perfect in the surf it is actually fine for the smaller waves and will give you a chance to get your surfing legs, it is also just a great all round board.

My first surfing board was the 9'6" Naish, felt small at first but pretty soon it felt huge on any sort of real wave because I only weigh 66kg. You are very welcome to borrow my 10'5 Starboard Drive, it is 30 wide and has quite fine rails - super stable and fast. If I could only have one board that would be it.

But.....I would go smaller

The 9'8 x 30 Element or something similar will give you heaps of stability and you will won't grow out of it too soon (OK I have a Starboard thing!)

Of course there are all the other options out there like the 9'6 Naish and the other smaller Naish boards and the PSH etc etc. Big brands, you pay a little more but get a known product with good resale.

Why don't you take a ride down to to Deans place one day and talk about a custom "woodie". I wouldn't be rushing into something too big. PM me if you would like to borrow the 10'5 or the 8'5 Pocket Rocket one day.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Mate, I've spent a fair amount of time working out what suits me and the 12' Glide for the river and the 10' Mana are perfect for 2 seperate types of Supping. (Surf / Still).

After riding the 12' across Port Hacking yesterday, the 10' was such an easy transition on a bumpy beack break today......they are different but so complimentary at the same time.

In saying that, the hype around the 12' PSH has me wanting to try it and add it in the future too.....but I won't be trading, it'll be an addition.

If you do want to trade on a 10' Mana drop me a line and can get you a straight swap or very close to on the Glide for a Mana and dependant on the other, a trade of some sort at a good price.....but that's in Sydney so we'd have to find a reputable courier between the states.

Cheers, Chris.

BTW, no more photo's here from me, apparently it pissed someone off. Pfff !!!

If you paddle the Yarra regularly, why sell the glide??
The glide would be perfect for it!
I have to agree with DJ, I'd try and swap the 11'6 for the Mana if I could.

Cheers

Hey guys, thanks for the comments.

Totally off the subject of the Glide which is sad and I'm sorry for hijacking it.

I won't get personal online but let's just say that a guy who I have 'tried' to be friends with for 13 years and who has for 13 years only ever been as polite as required in return made an unsavoury comment at the SPSC meet this morning at this persons 'local' break for which I can only assume related to this topic below or another with photo's of a 'secret / mysto' left called Sandon Point Lefts !

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59097

This same person assumes a gatekeeper role so it seems and recently took a disc of images I'd shot of him surfing / supping at his secret location to hand on to sponsors free of charge for which I delivered to his front door....but speaks out of school and in front of third parties rather than privately in an attempt to boost his own ego.

So, when I come across a secret spot I won't name it but I'll be hard pressed to find one so close to Sydney and in a region with over 400,000 inhabitants.

I look forward to a one on one in relation to this but seriously, it's so goddam childish it's not really worth it........we're stoked surfers sharing our passion for F*&KS sake.

When I find a secret spot I'm not going to tell or show anyone and won't even mention that it's a secret - therefore I will avoid suspicion that I have a secret.

Now that I know you have a secret spot can you give me a hint on where this secret spot is? I can keep a secret.

I have a secret spot that I'd like to tell everyone about.

It's a little wave out off the end of St Kilda breakwater.. and on a good 20+ knot southwester you can get some great runners..

I might even post a pic.. .. Waa-Hoo!.. Just noticed.. 4000 posts..

Some great advice in this thread and I appreciate all responses, most especially JonathanC and Surfanimals for your kind offers. As it happens, the good people at RPS Boardstore gave me the opportunity to test a Mana this morning and after that, I decided to take the plunge on the 10'. So the Glide is gone and I've kept the 11'6. I know DJ and others think I'm insane, but I honestly prefer the 11'6 to the Glide on flat water and in surf, and I don't expect to see too much downwinder action. I also anticipate taking other beginners out regularly so can't foresee the need to get rid of the 11'6 for quite some time. Jonathan's suggestion to speak with LSD about a custom woody is a good one. He's making me a paddle so I will talk with him about building my next cruiser.

Thanks again everyone.

Congrats.. You're going to love the Mana and I don't blame you for keeping the 11'6".. It's a classic allrounder IMO.. and the Glide is not really a board for the surf.

You need to tell my glide that. Cause it loves to chase down waves that would be totally uncatchable on the 11'6. Sure the Glide is hard to control on a wave but it's no worse than the 11'6 imho.

It's been about 1-2ft the last few times I've headed out to the surf and I've chosen to bring the Glide each time, the board is so much fun in these conditions, and you don't have to worry about running into anyone else - cause there is no one else out there.
