Right fellas this may have been covered before (so apologies) but could someone tell me if I flew to Aus (from NZ) and picked a board up and flew it back myself, would I be expempt the hefty tax applied when importing via freight??

Also does anyone know what sort of charge you'd be looking at for taking a board on the plane? I know someone was discussing it a while back but I didn't commit the info to memory

Knowing now the total cost to get a board here, it may actually be cheaper to go and get it myself having just looked at return flights to AUS from Auckland

Virgin take anything up to about a 9'8 I think....Qantas will do 9' and Jetstart suck balls and will only do up to 6'4....no import duty if you stick it in a cover and say its used....I have flown all around the world with boards and never had any trouble....if you worried make sure your cover is a heavy duty job and bung heaps of bubble wrap on it

Yep no problem if you purchase here and take home. But definately say it's used.
I think Virgin now let you carry 3m length, and Quantas 2.8m. I think that converted to feet is what Tux said.

Do the maths on a trip to Hawaii though. I just did some basic numbers and you will probably save money going there to get a board.

AIR NZ have always been very good to me between NZ and Aust as have Emirates. I have never had a problem. My golden rule is to make sure I am there at least 2.5 hrs before the flight is due to leave. This week I flew from Sydney to the Gold Coast on Virgin with 32kg (arrived 1 hr 20 mins before takeoff) and was not charged a cent. A suit bag (for a conference) normal clothes etc and 2 surfboards. No Dramas. I have been using just boardies and and a rashie up here so glad I did not push it and bring the wetsuit!!!

I shall be bringing a SUP back to NZ next month so it would be good if u can keep me posted of your efforts.

Good luck!

Hi all. Not going to go on like my first post ever!
Starlet come down to Taranaki if you can you'd love it. Plenty of beach breaks and a fair few points except they're a bit rocky. But theres heaps of room and range of wind direction set ups.
Got plenty of boards your welcome to pick from and borrow for a while. Really want to see someone else out as SUP is ver quiet round here. Only one in town at the mo, seen someone in Waitara and a couple out west but a slow start. Good really I'm in no rush to see any mayhem.
Got the range of Naish bananas from the wifes mothership 11'6, daughters 10'6 and reluctantly given 9'6 to the son when i got a 9'3. Now i got nothing for the flat or the rivers so a 9'5 mana arriving shortly- will be a workout keeping up with the girls.
Like these boards , have no comparisome as they're easy to get and my dealer looks after me so no probs or complaints in 2 years and they all rip.
Highjackin the thread i know but the big question from me to all youse is should i get the 8'10 as well as the mana. Planning to be down a couple to 84-85kg so will i sell the 9'3 or stuff it get them all. Is the 810 that hard and is it that much better than the 93? Anyone please? Plenty o boards Starlet your welcome if you make it!

Hi, Well there is a Naish sup hire at my local which is a place called Orewa (only breaks small here tho) on Aucklands East coast but I couldn't tell you of any others elsewhere? (DJ its old stock so calm down lol) . AK east coast has lots of breaks and is regarded as the longboarders coast. The west coast is about 35 mins away it has larger waves and is a bit more suited to shortboarding (conditions predict which I guess?) , again lots of breaks. Supping is getting more and more popular around here, but still people ask what I'm doing with a paddle? and if I take my longboard out people ask me where my paddle is??

I could list all the places to go but I think you'd be better off clicking onto;

www.marineweather.co.nz/forecasts/manu-bay

www.swellmap.com/reg_forecasts.php?region=aucklandeast&tag=TeAr#anchor

and seeing whats hot and whats not. I usually go to Te Arai point/The forestry on the east coast or Muriwai or Maori bay west coast. Obviously I've been further a field but these are the places closest to me.

There are hundreds of places to go on the north Island and if you are travelling around then yes the 'Naki' is supposed to be awesome as is Raglan, Gisbourne, Bay of plenty...i'm listing aren't I? Hope this helps??

Well i'd like to think you'll score some waves...and decent ones too at Raglan. When you go up to the Bay of Islands perhaps try a place called 'Taupo Bay', it is just stunning, it is a tiny little place that you drop down onto, the first views you get of the place are breath taking. It is an exposed coastline and gets a decent amount of swell. I went there in march this year and it was a solid 4ft with only about 4-5 people out, so I had a blast.

Keep me posted as to your travel plans and work/weather/waves permitting, I may be able to catch up with you and go supping.

Regards
