Hi all,

Heading to Byron Bay on Monday for 10 days. Just wondering the best place to hire a board. Really want to find somewhere that offers a variety of boards for both surf and cruisy paddles with the kids. What's the vibe like for SUP's at the Pass, Tallows etc.

Cheers, Wilco

Just stay away from the main surge take off at the pass and down past the boat ramp - head further down to Clarkes and you'll be fine.

Too many people, not enough space and too many drop in's to make it any fun at all but down toward Clarkes you'll have a ball if there's a little swell running or even flat for the kids.

They hire boards in front of the caravan park at Clarkes Beach (just south of the pub) from memory.

Cheers for the info. Staying at the caravan park so hire out the front would be great. Hopefully they have some 9-10 footers, rather than just the stock SUP school gear.

hey bro,

if you come across to lennox, head to Noel Grahams 'all above board' he stocks about 6 demos from new 9.5 mana, 10 mana, 10.6' lsd, 8.6' (?) emery...may even have a 14'nash (if ya can get it out of his hands)...
wind pending, lennox has great beachies out the front of the cafes/pub and if you've got the kids then 'tea tree lake' may be the go for you ( great picnic spot and bbqs - free even)
heaps to explore in the area - 10min south in ballina ( missigham bridge, north wall, speeds, flatrock, skinners...) a regular fark'n buffet!!
the local bunch - choice.

you might try a phone call to maddog surf in byron, john there has a few goodies, but it'll pay to call...wategos awesome

sal.

Depending on how capable you are and how crowded it is the Pass can be tricky with all manner of surfcraft vying for take off. Great when it is working though.
Wategos around the headland is a good option with plenty of peaks, less crowded and often good SUP waves.

Spent a fair bit of time at the Pass in the last few years (shortboard) and figured with all the mals, surfskis, grommets, dive boat launchers etc that SUP might be a the last thing needed out there.

Wategos sounds like the best option but hopefully score a few sneaky waves at Clarkes. Thanks for all the contacts for boards. Just have to cross the fingers for some swell now.

I agree ,Wategos often has some wide peaks which are perfect for sup and with the right conditions you can link up some pretty long rides, have fun.

wategoes and even belongil is the go. unless you want to kill a european back packer with no idea i'd steer clear of the pass. the traffic is just too much to enjoy yourself properly.
