A bit of lightning around this afternoon and I was feeling a bit nervous standing above everyone with a carbon paddle in hand. Any ideas how conductive it would be especially in the water??

So...you'd be standing in a large body of conductive material holding a long, relatively thin piece of conductive material (with wet hands)...

Fly Fishermen (including me) pack up their carbon fibre rods and seek shelter when there is lightning about;
Golfers pack up their carbon-fibre shafts and seek shelter when there is lightning about;
I reckon I'd do the same if I were out paddling

Thought that might be the case. I was thinking about lying down and paddling in towing my paddle behind me on my leggie

Was out at kirra this arvo when lightning and thunder simultaneously struck, I nearly stained my pants and thought that it was time to go in. I got another good one so I paddled back out and then another surfer said that I was game staying out so that was all the convincing I needed. He probably just wanted me gone.

Jonathan and I did a down-winder in a lightning storm once and when we stopped to talk out on the water our paddles were buzzing like Starwars light sabers.. Really..

Google 'lightning down-winder' for the vid..

Strap a 1-iron to your paddle.
Lee Trevino was quoted many years ago "If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Even God can't hit a 1-iron".

First time at Stent Rd to SCARED to play with the big boys, saw a few empty ones for me around at the back of. Yeeha over the fence stile with my 9.3 down by the stream, watch the thistles and blackberries or trip on the rocks - whoa at the wtf an electric fence!~! Is it going - no matter my sturdy plastic paddle will quell this menace, just push it down methinks? KAZAAM the carbon and bare feet smoked his momentum.
Got a heap o waves and unforgettable.

I think it roughly translates to went for a surf at a place called Trent, he had to go through a paddock and an electric fence. thought his paddle was plastic (go figure) but was carbon. Bang electric fence did its job. But being the tough kiwi kept going to his destination of surf.

easy
was very funny

Carbon paddles? Try a carbon windsurfing mast!

I remember one time i was sailing at Dutch Inn (back when I lived in WA), and there was a fair bit of lighting out on the horizon. As I thought it started to get a bit closer, I also started to think how I have this 4.6m long carbon lighting rod pointing more or less at the sky. I decided to head in to the beach just in case, lest I end up in the Darwin Awards.
