This article was in the Gold Coast Bulletin on Thursday. Interested to know if anybody else has had any close encounters.

I've had quite a few surfing and kitesurfing.

Probably 4 or 5 times kiting come over the back of a swell or wave and seen a shark cruising along-invariably it was more freaked to see me than I was it and they've taken off as soon as I've popped over the wave.

Surfing saw a HUGE shark at The Bower when I was a kid-a huge fin popped up in front of a few mates and I when paddling across the channel to Manly-we freaked and paddle up the rocks.

In Indo I've had numerous reef shark encounters-they seem pretty harmless, so far.

Once out trawling for marlin off Port Stephens we came across a whale carcass about 5 or 6 miles out and a HUGE white, between 15-20 feet (and more at the upper end) was feeding on the carcass-the shark was so big, it's girth was like a VW bug.

Caught, tagged and released my share of h/heads.

Found the body of a fisherman once (he was washed off the rocks at N Head-Syd. Harbour) when going fishing through the Heads and there was a group of small h/heads feeding and circling his body.

Lived on the headland at Palm Beach in Sydney and one day saw a group of 3 surfers oblivious to the fact that there was a sizeable shark about 10m away thrashing away at a bait ball, funny thing was another group about 50m away did see it and freaked and paddle in and run up the beach to warn the oblivious surfers, who then freaked and cartoon paddled up the beach.

Seen heaps of Wobbys etc. when diving.

Was out paddle surfing about 2 weeks ago and 60 Minutes was down filming Andy Lindrop at Palmy having one of his first surfs back after he was attacked at Avalon earlier this year. We shared a few waves and hooted him in to a couple.

So far I've escaped being bitten, to the chagrin of some...

The seawy is full of sharks and it's not uncommon to see them jump.

Had a dolphin jump on me once.
Sprained my wrist and crapped my duds.
Got away lightly cos that bugger was real heavy.

If you look at its face it looks like a cat

I restled with it for over 3 hours i lost all my air twice while draged under but i got the better of it in the end.

I was quite cut up and found myself explaining to the doctor what had happened and he agreed it was a close call and he notified the coast guard.

Even though it was a life changing experience i still felt the stink foot from the stingray has left me more scared on the inside and outside

Other than pulling in a bronzie on my fishing rod and having another chase my hooked snapper to the boat I ain't seen any other 'Mr Chompys', nor do I want to and I don't want any 'Mr Chompys' coming and visiting me whilst I am enjoying time in their domain!

However I do have a war story 100% true too! It was round about March time and I was out on my sup at my local break of all places. Windsurfers and kiters were out but the swell was sufficient to surf too.

I saw this old fella who had a windsurfing rig beside him, he was gesticulating for me to get out of the water.....That dreaded feeling coursed through me and I paddled real hard to the shore. It was really mushy and i got knocked off my board twice before catching a marginal wave in, all the time this fella was shouting 'Mr Chompy' !!! over and over (you see how i've cleverly omitted using THE word? good ay?)

Anyway back safely on the beach a few of us started to quizz the old fella and it quickly becomes apparent it wasn't a 'Mr Chompy' or 'Nobby Clarke' that he'd seen...turns out he wasn't Gesticulating he was Testiculating...yes waving his arms in the air talking a load of Bollox!!

That is a man eating crab, I had been to the doctor about a itch and he said oh lets have a look and what do you know.. This bloody thing was hanging on to my intestines with great grip.

I went home after it was removed and beheaded to find i was invaded by the buggers. to this day i suffer from them everywhere i go they seem to watch my every move.[}:)] They even dress up in costume and attack the sheep

Had a big fat bronze whaler coming straight to me a few weeks back but I left the area too quickly to find out if it was really interested in me or if it was just looking for a sheeep

Gizzie that is not a nice thing to say as I have been given the green light for a surf trip down your way as the waves at your place are better than here....now you have scared the bejeebers outta me with that tale!!

Only a few months back some surfer caught a wave in with an Orca down your way if my memory serves me correctly?...It was on the news.

Yep great uncrowded waves here at this time of year but don't tell everyone
99% of shark sightings in NZ are of bronze whalers but only 1 fatality attributed to them...a diver with fish tied to belt. Not considered dangerous in NZ unless provoked but I hear thay are keener on kangaroo
