Given the recent discussion's about Connor's technique and his results over the last year it's fair to say it works and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has tried it. Would it be fair to say we now have the Hawaiian, Tahitian and Connor strokes?

Also thinking about the mechanics of the actual stroke, made me think back to my baseball days. When facing a faster than usual pitcher you would choke up on the bat to bring it through the connection zone faster. Looking, and trying, Connor's stroke he is essentially choking up on the paddle allowing him to increase his cadence. Sure you lose power but the increased cadence must outweigh that.

as you say, it clearly works for him....IMO it may be one of those things that works really well for him no matter how unothodox it is. And it may be better for HIM than the other traditional strokes...I also think where it be best used is in the surf like BOP...but in true surf, not paddle out over one wave then lots of deeper water then one more wave and you out past the break. I think as BOP takes off you will see guys with shorter surf type paddles so they can up the cadence. High cadence works for clubbie mals in the surf and there are some similarities as well....but it depends on the day...lots of waves and not much ocean water, but if there is not many waves the longer stronger stroke would probably go better.

just some thoughts

PS... just looking at some of the pics of Conner's posture makes my back hurt.........

i've tried it. if your tired it's hard, if the waters choppy it's hard. change overs are hard- get it wrong, fumble around a bit and you've lost time, especially if someone is pressuring you.

no so easy to do well and constantly. also your general technique can break down if your not careful

do you think part of that is using a longer paddle and not holding the top handle.... Im guessing for shorter sprint races in the surf say 1km a short paddle and higher cadence may work for some???

from what i can make out, yes higher cadence, but also you use different muscles with the elbow down and more aligned with the body.

so you in affect share the work load around.

my paddles are 12" above and when i go connor style my top hand is close to the handle.

connor's paddles look really long, i guess when he needs to speed it up he drops the hand down.

bottom hand position also has a lot to do with stroke lenght/cadence and power.

someone explained it like gears.really low bottom hand -ie 1 st gear- short stroke/high cadence

i think you will find when connor has his top hand down his lower hand will be down around knee height.

it like golf in the way you can be in and out of form. long time paddlers always have the years experience on us 2 to 3 year newbies
cheers

Hey DW,

This is the closest I got to DW territory. Tavarua on left and Namotu on right was taken from Plantation.
Originally booked for 7 nights on Treasure Island, I had to sacrifice 1st night to stay in Nadi cause my 14ft Sup would fit on speedboat to Treasure. Caught the South Seas Cruise catarmaran out next day. We had 5 days only on the island and just did'nt work out. Took a 1/2 day boat ride to check out Castaway and plantation Islands for future stays. Then spent 8 nights at shangri-La. Bought a GoPro and used up 32gb of vid. 1st time in Fiji and will be back soon.

Still using your 10" paddle DW ?

Like you say Lacey, I noticed a couple of times the blade hitting the water in the recovery stage and it really throws your rhythm out.

I also found it easier holding the shaft in the gap between my fore finger and middle finger, rather than just holding it in my palm under the t grip.

Agree with you husq, unorthodox indeed but works for Connor and even noticed in one if the photos from the recent Gorge event Kai Lenny was using the technique.

I have been trying that technique after seeing the vid when first getting back on the board from the white water when a wave is looming and you want some instant speed without spinning the tail from too bigger strokes from the top of the paddle - the small quad fins have no grip

It works really well for the first 8-10 strokes or so and then gets you to speed for full paddle strokes.

I was surprised how quick the stroke rate can get and how quickly you build speed.

Cheers DW.

I will put a post up of my trip next couple of days. Look out for it and we'll chat away. I felt I've hijacked this thread a bit.

Cheers Scotty
